i'm getting less and less impressed by technicality these days

now I just look for a unique sound, in which case, any Neil Young or Lou Reed solo will do

You're off to a good start, but the bolded, I agree whole-heartedly. I should add a few when I get some free time.

Willie the Pimp has a brilliant solo, but Muffin Man obviously takes the cake as Zappa's best solo.

Just off the top of my head..

Death – The Philosopher
Burzum – War (Euronymous did a solo here “just for fun” but it sounded great anyways)
Mayhem – Freezing Moon
Slayer – Raining Blood
Grand Belial’s Key – Foul Parody of the Lord’s Supper
Rahowa – Ode To a Dying Race
Drudkh – The Price of Freedom
Morbid Angel – Rapture
Nocturnus – Before Christ / After Death
Peste Noire – Le Mort Joyeux
Iron Maiden – The Trooper
Metallica – Master of Puppets
Agalloch – A Desolation Song
Thanatos – Dawn Of the Dead

I don't know about the best, I'm partial to pretty much any solo Jimmy Page has ever put down, but besides that I think I'd give it to Hendrix for "Little Wing"

Also, if you haven't seen Prince's solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction for George Harrison, you are missing out big time!
