Best Guitar Solos

Which are the best guitar solos? The good ones anyway. Like eruption (Van Halen) or Fade to Black (metallica). Wait let me add one more Hallow be thy name (iron maiden).
:band:

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd has an awesome solo in it. One of my personal favs.

dac 12-14-2008 07:45 PM

Dewd Through teh Fire and Flames by Dragonforce is more ownage than all teh others guitar solos.

Bulldog 12-15-2008 02:28 AM

Not being so much of a metal fan these days, I guess I can't really judge, but here's one of my favourites anyway (at 1:30-something). I think it's Robert Fripp who plays this solo...

Fruitonica 12-15-2008 04:55 AM

Maggot Brain, ten minutes of blissful psychedelia drenched in reverb. From a 70's funk band no less.

Plus, the opening line is brilliant.

*fixed

But seriously there are about 4 or 5 Pink Floyd guitar solos that come to mind, as no one puts as much emotion into a guitar as Mr. Gilmour.

Also The Trees by Rush is a personal favorite.

you know the story behind that solo?

according to legend george clinton told eddie hazel to play as if his mother just died. they turned out the lights, hit record, and never bothered with a 2nd take.

my personal favourite rock solo comes from a simliar studio fluke. 'three days' is the only song all 4 original members of jane's addiction recorded together on their 'ritual de lo habitual' album prior to breaking up. the whole song was recorded in one take (more impressive when you consider it's length and complexity coupled with the bands excessive drug use). the live version that was released on 'kettle whistle' a few years later is even better.

The more you know.....

I quite like this one...

Some really great moments throughout the song, doesn't hurt that Captain Beefheart is on vocals.

seminsh 12-16-2008 08:21 AM

Jimmy Page solo in "Stairway to Heaven" and Kirk Hammet solo in "Master of Puppets".

It seemed like you weren't finished, so I fixed that for you.

Most of the choices in this thread are good so far, Maggot Brain and Robert Fripp are both great. My personal favs are Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson and The Curse of Castle Dragon by Paul Gilbert. I'll post a video later, YT is blocked at school and all the proxies in the world won't work :\

spark10036 12-16-2008 10:55 AM

"Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" by Porcupine Tree (it's actually performed by Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth))

texasrocker 12-18-2008 09:48 AM

I really like the solo on Guns N Roses "Sweet Child O Mine"

MakeitLegit 12-18-2008 10:31 AM

In My Dreams

Kamikazi Kat 12-19-2008 09:44 AM

Starts around 44 seconds in.

But who else likes that solo besides? Nobody. Why can't everybody love off-key atonal insanity as much as me?!!

I'm sure there are better ones, but that is the most recent awesome guitar solo I can think of.

Bulldog 12-22-2008 11:05 AM

Here's another favourite of mine...

Dr. Yellow Black 12-22-2008 03:24 PM

Social Distortion - Don't Drag Me Down.

It gets me every time.

Anteater 12-22-2008 04:52 PM

Hmn, if you guys want an incredible guitar solo, then Frost's Black Light Machine is the one to hear!! :finger:

(The solo starts at the 2:57 mark)

Cheese 12-23-2008 02:43 AM

Two that get me are Black Label Societys "Sold My Soul" and Wishbone Ash's "Persephone"

bobable 12-26-2008 05:26 PM

Here are some of my favorites that haven't been listed.
For the Love of God - Steve Vai
Child in Time - Deep Purple
Sultans of Swing (live with the sax/guitar duet at the end) - Dire Straits
Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Time - Pink Floyd
July Morning - Uriah Heep
Pawn Shop - Sublime
Stranglehold - Ted Nugent

Led Zeppelin's Heartbreaker, wasn't meant to be there originally until Page decided to slam one in, brilliantly out of place, superflous and totally insane. The guitar set up was completely different so it didn't even fit in with the sound, the timing is all wrong and it's so sloppy it could make a virtuoso cringe. But it's full of attitude and excess and that's what Zep was about.

You should watch the live DVD Arriving Somewhere. They do a fantastic job with that song. Granted Wilson makes it twice as long.

I can't believe I forgot about that. What a great solo. My buddy learned how to play it.

I have the dvd... but anws cheers to that:beer:

my fav part from it is where Wilson's guitar strings break while they are trying to close their set with trains, he changes guitar and they just finish from where they left off. they're genius, they make a clumsy scenario seem so cool

PartisanRanger 12-29-2008 02:29 PM

I'll be cliche and put a vote in for the solo in Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Also the solo in Judas Priest's Painkiller is awesome.

CrackledNitro 12-29-2008 07:00 PM

It's short and it's sweet, it's the guitar solo in Transdermal Celebration by Dean Ween of, well, Ween.

lucylamppost 12-29-2008 07:27 PM

john frusciante solo in the mars volta's L'Via L'Viaquez

Astronomer 12-30-2008 03:31 PM

^ Ooh, I too love that.

jackhammer 12-31-2008 01:10 PM

These are the best solo's ever and make sure you listen all the way through. top quality! It's a little offensive too.

Finally someone who gets it.

Comus 01-02-2009 04:43 PM

Seems a lot of people remember how awesome it is when it's mentioned, such brilliance.

suicidegus 01-02-2009 07:12 PM

i gotta say one of my personal faves is the solo in judas priests Hellbent for leather-

jackhammer 01-06-2009 05:51 AM

Here are some of mine.

Jose Padilla - Blues For Ibiza (guitar by Dave Jeffs):

Roger Waters - Sexual Revolution (guitar by Eric Clapton :yikes: one of the best things he has ever done- check out his work @ the 3 minute mark) :

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well (they were so good back in the day):

Fuck the haters:

jackhammer 01-06-2009 06:49 AM

^^

Sounds good. Who are they?

Janszoon 01-06-2009 10:18 AM

"The Maven" by The Church has one of my favorite guitar solos ever in it, running from 4:30 until the end of the song. Unfortunately, I can't find it on youtube, but you can click here to give it a listen.

PinkWolf 01-07-2009 06:46 AM

I can't really think of any best solo..whichever solo would fit the song and mood I guess.
