Yeah, Rob could only catch up to the then shortened version of Some Kind of Monster, which was released as a single in 04. Which was, IMO, the only halfway decent Metallica song that came out of the entire St. Anger album.

Thats right, he was in the movie, and on the tour, but not the album.

So is this where I 'fess up to not having a single Metallica album?

How is Death Magnetic as an introduction? Kind of working backwards I guess. I imagine it's not their high point.

Your best bet is to start with Master of Puppets I think.

I agree with Janz above, but for your second part, Death Magnetic isn't terrible though it is a much more laid back thrash album. I wouldn't put it off because of what critics say either, it's got some pretty good tracks.

Cool, sounds like a plan.

Edit: Well first thing that strikes me about Master of Puppets is that it sounds a hell of a lot like ST's How Will I Laugh Tomorrow and it predates that album by two years.

Go for Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All, and the Black album and then you can probably stop. An argument could be made for Kill Em' All, but I've never been a fan.

I guess S&M is pretty good, too.

Cool, so pretty much most of their early works. Will see how Master of Puppets grabs me and go from there. Thanks.

There's nothing wrong with later works, but its a different sound. Re/Load is hard rock. For hard rock albums, they're pretty good. St. Anger has 2.5 good songs. Haven't heard DM yet.

I tend to listen to whole albums generally but it's also good when those rarely listened to tracks pop up in a random mix. It's nice to hear a track and go who the **** is this and why haven't I been listening to them?
