@Catgod,

If you like Death Metal, and the heavier side of Thrash. You'll probably like Suffocation.

Also, when I looked up TBDM, I was pretty instantly reminded of Benighted

Lastly, as obvious as this might be (it's obvious, oh it's obvious all right. I spent a while wondering if I should even say this)

Slayer and Metallica go pretty good together.

Looking for a Power Metal band that's like 3 Inches of Blood, and NOT DragonForce. *shudders at the thought of DragonForce*

Also, I'm looking for a Melodic Death Metal band like The Black Dahlia Murder.

Finally, I'm looking for Thrash, like Slayer (any particular song recommendations for Slayer would be nice as well.)

Thanks!

At The Gates.

If you're after that kind of a Doom metal sound then definitely check out the Swedish epic Doom metal band Candlemass, specifically their 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, that is an essential metal album that no self-respecting headbanger would be without.

You may also want to try out another doom metal band called Witchcraft. Their 2007 release The Alchemist had a really nice old school doom sound but with plenty of newer psychedelic overtones to it. It's kind of a polarized album though so you may like it or hate it, but it's a band that nobody else has mentioned that is at least worth a look.

Then of course you might find some gems with the American stoner metal bands like Sleep and Kyuss, two of the most popular. If you go that direction you NEED to give Sleep's Dopesmoker a try. It's an hour long track that is just all over the place, but it may be a little too esoteric for your first experience, but it is one of the most regarded stoner metal albums of the last decade. As for Kyuss, well any of their albums are worth a listen but their 1994 Welcome to Sky Valley is often the best place for beginners to start.

If Melodic Death Metal is what you're after then definitely check out some of the bands from the Gothenburg metal scene back in the '90's. In Flames, Hypocrisy, Dark Tranquility, and At the Gates are all good places to start. Here are the albums to grab from each band:

In Flames - Whoracle (1997), The Jester Race (1996)
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul (1995)
Dark Tranquility - Skydancer/Of Chaos and Eternal Night (1999)
Hypocrisy - Abducted (1996), The Final Chapter (1997), Hypocrisy (1999) (it's a toss up between those three)

You'll also definitely want to check out Carcass' last two albums Heartwork (1993) and Swansong (1996) as they really helped pioneer the genre.

Evile are one of your best bets; almost exactly same style. Only 2 albums released, of which I have 1 (Enter The Grave), but by my standards, it is superb.

Slayer songs that I enjoy are: Raining Blood; War Ensemble; Angel of Death; Deviance; Love to Hate; Jesus Saves.

I'm not too sure if doom metal is my thing, even though Black Sabbath have that obvious doom metal sound but they might be an exception. I'll give them bands you suggested a listen to, I'll also try and get into Kyuss as I love Josh Homme but as of yet I've never really given that much attention to Kyuss, just QOTSA. I'll be sure to give Welcome to Sky Valley a listen. Thanks for the advice :)

Epicus Doomicus Metallicus was a brilliant album, to which I agree 100% for checking it out. It produced Solitude, one of, if not, their greatest hits. Under The Oak is also another great track on the album.

I also enjoyed From The 13th Sun, where their music took on a bit of a faster approach.

Both are two favourites of mine.

Yess. I'm glad to see people giving Epicus Doomicus Metallicus more credit than Nightfall. While I think Nightfall is classic and all, it doesn't touch EDM. On the note of Solitude, easily my favorite Candlemass song. Also, its amazing to me Candlemass is still releasing great music.

I have tons of epic-Doom suggestions if anyone needs them. Doom Metal/Stoner Metal and Sludge Metal is where most of my knowledge is when it comes to metal. So just let me know.

I'm looking for some good hardcore metal like Hatebreed, Full Blown Chaos, or Walls Of Jericho. Any suggestions?

diversecity 06-02-2010 05:38 PM

I'm looking for some new symphonic metal bands. Like Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Delain ect.
No "death grunts" or anything of the sort please.
