Metal & Rock Music Recommendations

This is the ONLY thread to post in if you are looking for Metal & Rock recommendations. EG looking for atmospheric metal, heavy riffs, growling vocals etc.

Any new threads started asking for help will be moved or deleted unless they are in here.

I like Gojira and Meshuggah. I hate growly vocals for the sake of it, but I love Gojiras vox because they work so well.

Where do you recommend I take my search for teh brutal methul based on this information?

Alfred 03-17-2009 09:52 PM

Have you heard Opeth?

GuitarBizarre 03-17-2009 11:09 PM

Yes, but I don't remember much about them except I didn't like it. Will give them another try.

I still cannot find this album anywhere online. All links are either broken or just lead to their myspace. Leak my ass.

can you spare an up? :)

Bane of your existence 03-18-2009 03:10 AM

Man I really would if I could. My internet connection here is horrible and doesn't support uploads/downloads. I'm actually being forced to buy albums with money. Like what am I fifty?

lucifer_sam 03-18-2009 03:34 AM

I'm perfectly willing to buy it when I see it but I can't imagine my local indie store would manage to pick it up when their idea of heavy metal is Iced Earth and Cradle of Filth (shudder).

thanks anyways dude

adidasss 03-18-2009 08:28 AM

I feel like some rock laden with guitar solos. I've just put South Southern Delta by Jimi Hendrix after a good 10 years and I'm digging the shit out the solos (although the drumming is a tad lacking, at least if you've heard The Mars Volta). Same goes for My morning jacket, the Volta etc. Hit me.

jackhammer 03-20-2009 06:00 AM

How about something like this Marijan?

adidasss 03-20-2009 06:50 AM

I was thinking something more virtuoso-like...

jackhammer 03-20-2009 07:23 AM

??????

adidasss 03-20-2009 09:44 AM

No no...nevermind. Thanks for trying...I'm just gonna listen to more Muse...;)

lachan 03-21-2009 10:07 PM

So I've been trying to find a some heavy rock with a decent female vocalist, ideally they'd sound like this but any and all recomendations are welcome.

hmm...apparently I can't post links...but if you're familiar with rammstein then the chick that does backup for engel is perfect

edit: something after the 90s
ww.youtube.com/watch?v=I9DdyBHxGXQ <-Engel

You don't post bands you think are good here, you respond to people's requests :thumb:

Scarlett O'Hara 03-25-2009 03:37 AM

I recommend Made In China and Incarnate, they're a rock/blues band and heavy/thrash metal band respectively. They're both from New Zealand who are doing pretty well and I want to see if others from around the world might like them too.

Made In China on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads

and

Incarnate on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads

Let me know what you think!!

well, you could always go Joan Jett and the Blackhearts...

Rage Against the Machine 03-27-2009 09:59 PM

I need sludgy post-rock like Jesu, preferably not instrumental.

Lacuna Coil.

Child of Boleskine 03-28-2009 03:31 AM

If youre looking for a band with a great sound from a cool female vox then Lacuna Coil ain't too shabby

Queens of the Stone Age are the best ever ever ever (apart from Stonesour - ahem)

Add Ambeon to this list too.

dj_Hcore 04-01-2009 07:56 PM

well these bands aren't along the female lines but they are the same genre or close.

The Bled, Bleeding Through, Black Veil, Blood Red Disciples, hmm In Fear and Faith, As I Lay Dying are all really good, some harder than others though.

DMBassDude 04-01-2009 08:00 PM

And Whitechapel. and Pantera. and Exodus. And Megadeth.

jeff 04-02-2009 05:05 PM

good female vocalist bands are: iwrestledabearonce, Light this City and arch enemy

thisWARisours 04-05-2009 04:00 PM

So I'm looking for some songs that are like Boston's "Peace of Mind"...something that is catchy and upbeat...but not too classic and light.

Boston - Peace of Mind

Boston - Peace of Mind

I'm not really into catchy and upbeat, but I recommend Mother Love Bone. Some of their songs are a bit slower than Boston, but the others make up for that.

Also check out Stone Temple Pilots if you haven't already. (Everyone's heard of them, obviously.) If you don't buy their entire discography, get 'Thank You', a compilation with a great unreleased song -- 'All in the Suit That You Wear'.

I recommend Drain STH, an all female metal band from Sweden. They only released 2 albums, and appear disbanded. The first, Horror Wrestling, is the better of the two. Lyrics are similar to Alice In Chains. :D Of all the bands for a group of beautiful Swedish women to emulate...

GuitarMan 04-19-2009 01:23 PM

I'm looking for new bands that have the 80's hair metal feel. Stuff that sounds a bit more on the GNR, Motley Crue side than the Def Leppard side.

int3r4ct 04-28-2009 11:41 AM

Anyone got any suggestions for bands like Sum 41, The Offspring, or Blink 182?

Thanks

Automatic Slim 04-28-2009 03:03 PM

If I like:

1. early Katatonia; Solitude Aeturnus
2. Tad; Willard
3. 'Painkiller' and 'Jugulator' by Judas Priest; i.e. something a bit heavier than 'classic' Priest

what else would I like?

Hey, I'm just looking for any up and coming groups that would be worth listening to. Preferably no metal unless it's something really special along the lines of Opeth, Katatonia, Gorod etc. Mostly, I would prefer rock that's got something good to offer!

Also, just fyi up and coming is referring to bands that have released their first album within the last 2-3 years. So keep that in mind!

Thanks!

Stone Birds 06-08-2009 01:55 PM
