He only has around 99 official albums to choose from. Maybe Steely Dan as well. You'll find some Jazz Fusion with both of these artist/bands, and plenty of experimental and prog at the same time. |

Zappa isn't prog. Prog is for fags. Zappa is for middle aged men who like to wear dresses and sing erotic showtunes in Swahili to Star Wars memorabilia.

2. I'm not middle aged, but I look better in a dress surrounded by Star Wars memorabilia than you ever will. :tramp: |

Watermelon in Easter Hay is one of his best. Zoot Allures is OK. Why Does It Hurt When I Pee is a classic. But my personal favorite is Dirty Love. Its a more funk rock/P-funk kinda' song though. Not prog. I think he was just genius in the studio. His album recording's and production is outstanding in my opinion. |
Well I've been listening to them a lot lately and I was aware of them since a few years ago; but since the early release of Heroes I've really fell in love with the band. Here's my top 5 Sabaton songs I've gone over it a lot and deliberated I made a playlist.

Metal Similar to Slipknot
Im just getting into metal and I kinda liked Slipknot. I like the polysyllabic poetic lyrics, but the guitar feels a little simple, I'm not sure quite what I'm looking for but I would like some recommendations. Thank you!

Slipknot Scroll down to the similar artists list on the right side and you're on your way. |
You might want to check out Joey Jordisons band Scar the Martyr.
|
how about mushroomhead?
|
Five Finger Death Punch, close enough similarities for that to be a valid recommendations as well.
|
Slayer's God Hates Us All album is a bit Slipknot-ish.
|
Rather bands that sound like Slipknot, here's some other stuff I think you should be able to dig:
Spoiler for other stuff:

Helloween = Slipknot

Backstreet boys. Listen to the song nameless they have pop hooks in that song

These dudes are kinda similar. Also one of the sickest vids I've ever seen.

Nu metal with the brutality of death metal. Not too bad I must say.

FIRST POST, sorry if I did it wrong?!

Hi people ! I just joined this forum mainly because I'm looking for advice on what band/genre I should listen to.
I listen mostly to rock and metal, but I don't really enjoy most of the growling or non-clean vocals. Bands like elvenking are perfect for the kind of metal I like. The thing is, I've been listening to power metal for a while now, but I find most of the popular bands dull and chessy (yeah blind guardian, talkin' about you) don't get me wrong, I like the genre a lot because of the energy and cool rhythms I hear, many of my favorite bands of all time are power metal bands, but only a few actually stand out for me (Sonata Arctica, Helloween, Angra, Edguy, Avantasia, Dark Moor, Elvenking) I think I have to stop searching in the power metal realm, but I do believe that I can find more worthy bands to listen to. Some examples of the styles I love are Sonata Arctica - Deathaura (great energy, really cool storytelling, feels like the opera. Also energetic and beautiful) Angra- The Shadow Hunter (Brilliant complex storytelling, the progressive style is gorgeous as well, really like that intro) Helloween - The King for a Thousand Years (complex song, exciting all throughout and again, complex lyrics and story) These are the type of songs I'm looking for in power metal, but I'll continue. I've been listening more to progressive metal and rock, bands like Symphony X, Riverside, Dream Theater, Ayreon Angra is also progressive, another reason to love them. The thing about progressive metal is the songs sometimes get too technical for me, who isn't really a musician to understand all the instruments and music more in depth. To summarize, there is one band that will always have everything I look for, and it is Mago de Oz. It's a spanish band, but it has all the features I adore, complex lyrics, good sounding, complex songs that sound awesome. Just listen to the album Jesus de Chambeli and see what I'm talking about. Thanks for reading :) hope I'm posting this in the right place :P Oh and one last question, what genre would you say this song is? (youtube) watch?v=B6JVjuo1u5Q |
After being a big fan in my late teens and afterwards spending years thinking the genre was lame and ridiculous, I've been getting into Black Metal again lately.
I've always enjoyed Burzum's "Filosofem" and "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" and I'm looking for some other BM in the vein. I like a nice raw sound, a hypnotic quality, some tasteful keyboards can be a nice addition, but are not necessary, and I like my vocals really ****ed up and passionate. I also enjoyed listening to Nyktalgia, Weakling and early Ulver the last few days. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've checked out quite a bit today, mostly superficially clicking through some tracks of highly rated albums. Some other artists that seem cool upon first listen: Darkspace, Gris, Passage D'Hiver, Blut Aus Nord (thanks, Batlord) |

Took The Band on the highway to work this morning, didn't care for most of the album but King Harvest and Up On Cripple Creek stood out to me. Looking for more tunes along these lines. Laid back roots rock but still enough southern grit, twang, and movement to confidently soundtrack a riverside bonfire. Minimal ballads, minimal piano. Harmonicas and twangy leads encouraged. I've already worked my way through the obvious: CCR, Skynyrd, Allman Bros.

Certainly not bad, but too...polished might not be the right word, but something like that. |

It's difficult to pinpoint for me, I'm just not that well versed and experienced with BM, at least not anymore |
Thorns are an older band (the guy behind it was actually one of the people to originally develop the Norwegian BM style of riffing), but Snorre was unfortunately caught up in Euronymous' murder and spent some time in prison, so he never got to release more than demos until he was released and managed to finally record a debut.
Thorns plays some more traditional black metal, but they seamlessly incorporate industrial elements that give the music a kind of "cyber black metal" thing. They never quite sound like traditional Norwegian black metal though. Here's one of their more industrial sounding songs. And here's one of their more black metal tracks. Relatively speaking of course. Also much more accessible than Blut Aus Nord. Too bad they only released the one album, but it's fantastic. Deathspell Omega seem to be the most respected third-wave black metal band, even though I've never been as big of a fan, but they play around with dissonance. Perhaps they'd be more your speed. |

Deathspell Omega on the other hand seem worth checking out, the vocals aren't quite right either, but still cool and the music is great. Thanks. |
