Neurosis
Isis
Pelican
Rosetta
The Ocean
Minsk

If you are a fan of those bands, check out these guys as well:

"Sins" by Irreversible is a great album. Should give it a listen if you have not.

Add Cult of Luna and your list of recommendations is now complete. IMO, Isis is tops.

I always viewed Isis as Neurosis Jr. personally. Both bands are great in their own right, but I would say Neurosis is the better of the two.

From what i've sampled from Isis, off of Panopticon, it appears that this genre is appealing to me. All reviews and such that I've read mention Neurosis, but they have such a body of work I wouldn't know where to begin. I'm challenging someone to post a link the "best" Neurosis song haha

Your being unreasonable by calling Isis "jr" Neurosis. Certainly they were influenced by them, but over series of great albums, they forged their own identity. Furthermore, I really don't think their albums sound that similar at all.

I love Neurosis, but they also covered other genres other than post metal, so even though they helped pioneer it, I'd say Isis would be a better example for a first timer delving into p-m. Neurosis albums include post-metal songs, as well as a lot of other styles, similar to Swans albums of the 90's, which were highly diverse. Neurosis offered up a combination of post, sludge and industrial metal. Isis made post-metal album, through and through, sticking to that style through out, which again makes them a better example for a newbie.

Determining which group is better "metal" band is a tough call, but...I just may end up agreeing with you. But if you're talking "post" metal, I'm sticking with Isis.

"Through Silver in Blood" and "Times of Grace", are where to start with Neurosis. Consider "The Eye of Every Storm" if you prefer their more ambient side, or check out earlier albums like "Enemy of the Sun" if you like the heavier riffs. All their albums are quality.

"Through Silver and Blood" is the defining post-metal album. If you have any interest i the style that one is the one to start with for sure. Everything after that is also great. I also enjoy "A Sun that Never Sets"

I was refering to Neurosis or Isis in the world of post-metal. Not just in metal as a whole.

The I suppose I should refer it to as "Atmopheric Sludge Metal" rather than "post-metal".

For the most part I do enjoy Isis, "Panopticon" is probably their best work. Though "Wavering Radiant" and the Melvins split just didn't hold up to the earlier albums.

Both bands are great, I just prefer Neurosis as a whole when talking the post-metal era of them when compared to the output of Isis.
