I would say it was worse. Radio stations like the station Brad Stengel mentioned, WBCN in Boston, actually completely changed their format overnight from classic rock and hair bands to "alternative" which meant about 90% grunge. It was total grunge overload.

It has never bothered me and TBH he usually buried his vocals a little in the production anyhow.

If only grunge music was as entertaining as this thread... I think some of us should start a grunge band and call it Bugger Me Sideways and Call Me Doris...

I agree. I dont find his vocals any worse than, say, Neil Young.

Neil Young is another person whose vocals I have trouble getting past.

Well, than that explains it all then! I listen to Jeff Mangum on a religious basis, so Neil Young and J. Mascis don't even phase me.

I hadn't heard of Jeff Mangum until just now so I just listened to some samples of his stuff and his voice sounds fine to me. I don't generally have a problem with unconventional vocal styles (I'm a huge J. G. Thirlwell fan for example), but Neil Young and J Mascis just happen to be among the handful of people I can think of whose singing voices are an obstacle for me.
