Faith No More appreciation thread

I LOVE "The Real Thing". Almost every track was absolutly excellent.

mr dave 06-01-2009 06:34 PM

i haven't listened to 'the real thing' since about 1999. then again that's also when i found a copy of it floating around a computer lab in school prior to losing it after graduation.

either way, i'm torn between 'angel dust' and 'album of the year' as top picks. i find AotY a lot tighter overall but nothing compares to '****lobber'.

Alfred 06-01-2009 07:35 PM

Faith No More seems like a band I'd really like. What's the best album?

khfreek 06-01-2009 07:43 PM

^ Angel Dust.

I've been listening to this band recently, and while I like all their output, I really like Chuck Mosely's vocals. Weird, I know.

333 06-01-2009 08:24 PM

Their Live at Brixton Academy is pretty entertaining. You guys know there is a reunion comin' up, right?

PinkCigarette 06-01-2009 09:05 PM

I walked into the grocery store the other day and they were playing "Easy" on the radio. I ****ing LOVE that song.

333 06-01-2009 09:42 PM

^ ME TOO! I like Patton's version better. I doubt they were playing that in the store.

european dates only and most likely a means to secure more capital for ipecac records.

333 06-02-2009 12:41 AM

Yes, we've discussed this in the Avant Garde section .. I remember. :) 'Twas a good convo.

jackhammer 06-02-2009 01:48 PM

Wow. Not a thread about these guys! I loved The Real Thing for years (well still do) and I caught them twice on the tour. The first time was before 'Epic' hit big and was in this tiny venue that holds about 200 and they blew me away. About 9 months later they were at a 2,000 capacity venue and I got to stagedive :). for some reason or another I stopped listening to the band and recently rediscovered them recently with the brilliant Angel Dust.

Very groundbreaking band who pushed a lot of barriers down.

Zer0 06-02-2009 02:36 PM

It's about time i saw a Faith No More thread! Angel Dust is definatly their best album, and it hasn't aged a bit. I'd love to see them live on their reunion tour.

Well put, Ja-ha. That's what I'm calling you from now on.

Ja-ha.

Sounds a little close to Jar Jar (binks) and I'm not a big Star Wars fan. i have been called worse though!

Can't believe there was no FNM thread before today! Shame on MB of the past. :D

I've loved these guys since I first saw the "Epic" video on MTV way back when, and Mike Patton has been one of my favorite singers since, also. Unfortunately I never got to see them live...my parents wouldn't let me go to the Metallica/FNM/GnR show, I was like 15 I guess. Bastards. And I didn't start going to shows till I was 17 or 18. Like Jackhammer, I lost touch with them at some point, but for me it was after Angel Dust. I'm not sure really what happened, I think I just got more into industrial and punk, I don't know. So eventually, I think in 98 or 99, I was talking to a guy that told me I really should check out their last two albums, so I did and FNM and I were re-joined. I like both but think I prefer Album of the Year.

It's really tough for me to pick a favorite album. For years I liked The Real Thing best. Some of my favorite tracks are definitely on that album ("Surprise! You're Dead!", "Zombie Eaters", "Underwater Love", etc.) But now the production sounds very dated and thin to me, and Mike's vocals are more nasally than I've become used to. I'd love a remaster of that album, big time. It would really refresh my enjoyment of it. Angel Dust was always awesome but some songs I don't care for that much, I guess. I don't hate them, but there was always something about a couple of them that didn't sit well with me. "RV" and "Ji-zlobber" are awesome. I really like the mellow crooners on the last two albums. "Helpless", "She Loves Me Not", etc.

I like the early pre-Patton stuff too, but not as much. Before I learned about the band's history, I did assume that it was Patton singing "We Care a Lot". They are somewhat similar (early Patton, anyway) if you're not paying close attention.

I would kill to see a reunion show...though festivals aren't my thing and I would prefer to see them in a small indoor venue. That will probably never happen. At least I can say I saw Mr. Bungle in such an environment. :thumb: I'm also usually against band reunions because when they make new albums they usually suck, but my love of FNM is so deep that I've give 'em a pass and let them record a new album. I like Patton's voice so much and enjoy him in a rock environment more than anything, so I don't think there's any chance I would not like it (unless we're talking 10+ years from now or something).

jackhammer 06-02-2009 03:56 PM

Evidence is one of the 'purest' songs that FNM ever did. I think that's a damn masterpiece. Funny that all this FNM talk has enticed to me to put on Mr. Bungles 'California'. What a stupendous album.

They wouldn't let you see a gig at 15? I really feel for you mate. My first was at 15 and Slayer no less 1987 :D. For some reason it will never be forgotten!

sidewinder 06-02-2009 04:26 PM

Well I guess they knew I was listening to heavy music and didn't want me to get hurt. They probably saw it as an adult thing, which honestly it was. We lived in the burbs and I always hung out with my buddies in the neighborhood, we were good kids. The whole concept of a metal/hard rock show to them was probably crazy. (I don't know to what extent they partied when they were young). Though they did let my two sisters go see New Kids on the Block around that same time! They could have been trampled by NKOTB freak-fans.

TumorAttitude 06-02-2009 05:00 PM

*can't believe everyone agrees with me on something*

sidewinder 04-15-2010 08:57 PM

Shameful this thread is only one page.

Anyway, Faith No More played the last 3 nights at The Warfield in San Francisco, being joined by original front man Chuck Mosley for a 4-song encore, and a duet with Mike Patton, on the 3rd night last night. I thought that was pretty cool! Would have been a lot cooler if I was there of course. Here was the set list:

The band's setlist was as follows:

01. Reunited
02. From Out of Nowhere
03. Land of Sunshine
04. Caffiene
05. Evidence
06. Gentle Art of Making Enemies
07. Chinese Arithmetic with Poker Face
08. Last Cup of Sorrow
09. Cuckoo for Caca
10. Ben
11. Ashes to Ashes
12. Midlife Crisis
13. Digging the Grave
14. King For A Day
15. Epic
16. Just a Man

Encore 1 (with Chuck):

17. As the Worm Turns
18. Crab Song
19. We Care A Lot
20. Mark Bowen

Encore 2:

21. Chariots of Fire/Stripsearch
22. Introduce Yourself (with Chuck and Mike)

****ty fan-made vids, surely it was much better in person:

gunnels 04-15-2010 09:10 PM

I've heard 'Epic' before and thought it was god awful. I'm hoping that's just one of their weaker songs. That voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
I'll give those vids a try once I am on a computer that supports flash.

If you're not familiar with the band, I wouldn't recommend live fan videos as a way to familiarize yourself and see if you like it. They generally sound like ass. And that goes for any band, IMO. Check out the album Angel Dust. I would also recommend The Real Thing but Patton's vocals are more nasally on that one and that's where 'Epic' is from. The track was great at the time but it's definitely not one I love anymore. The album itself I still love though...but the production is dated and thin, I'd love a remaster of it.

Yeah two pages! :band:

im listening to one of their songs right now..

wwwWWWWOOOOOooooowwwwww

such depth and insight

gotta agree with Sidewinder on his assessment of 'The Real Thing', it's unfortunate as it was one of the better albums of the early 90s and helped the mainstream break away from the poofy hair and spandex to open the doors for alt-rock.

kind of disappointed they don't do ****lobber live but i can understand why, they didn't seem to do it a lot back in the day either, live clips of that track are nearly impossible to find and any time i've lucked out the song is always split across two clips. thankfully Just a Man turns out to be just as epic when it's done live.

B_Hammock 04-16-2010 05:35 PM

I was never a huge fan of Faith No More until I saw them at Soundwave in Sydney two months ago, man they were ****ing awesome. Angel Dust, Album of the Year and The Real Thing have become three of my favourite albums.

Exactly how I felt about Angel Dust. Is The Real Thing even more that way?

The Real Thing is incredibly dated but it was a HUGE album in my time and turned a lot of people onto other forms of music.

Still an absolute masterpiece:

sidewinder 04-16-2010 08:43 PM

Yeah I actually really enjoy King for a Day Fool for a Lifetime and Album of the Year far more often than the older ones. The production is so much better, and hell I'm older so the more mature vibe (sort of) fits me fine. :D

That would have to be my favourite FNM song.. I love it.

^ Is basically how I think of Faith No More. I'd even go so far as to call King For a Day my favourite album of theirs - unfocused, sure, but that's part of the charm for me. Plus it's probably the only album I bought when I was 13, 14 or whatever that I still dig to this day.

Angel Dust is the mutt's nuts too, even if it's been a while since I last listened to it. Any fans of it have probably come across this before, but for those who haven't and have about an hour to spare...

^ (You'll find the rest of it under the related vids bit at the end).

Seltzer 04-17-2010 07:04 AM

I'm still not sure whether I prefer Angel Dust or the Real Thing. Edge of the World is so delightfully sleazy sounding while taking the piss out of pedos but Jizzlobber is so... Jizzlobber!

As I've mentioned in the past, I quite like King for a Day even if it is a wee bit patchy (a couple of the nu-metal before 'nu-metal' existed parts are a bit too redolent of Disturbed for my liking). Evidence is awesome and I'm also partial towards the S/T track. That bass is delicious!

Astronomer 04-17-2010 08:11 PM

Has anyone seen them live in their most latest stint of comeback tours? I was supposed to see them in Australia but missed out because I wasn't in the country, but I heard it was an amazing show. I actually just posted a video about it in the Chatroulette thread because they streamed their show live on Chatroulette and spoke to random strangers. All of my friends that went said it was a blast. I'm pretty bummed I didn't get to go, would've loved an opportunity to see them live :(

Give Angel Dust a try, no nasally vocals on that one.

My Mind Sedate 05-13-2010 02:47 PM

I never liked Faith No More, but I was lucky enough to be enlightened just the other day, and now I get it!

I'm really digging Be Aggresive, a total riff fest. And then I hear, "So give it up, I've got to have it. I SWALLOW, I SWALLOW, I SWALLOW, I SWALLOW."

A song about giving head? Awesome, if only George Michael was as eloquent.

Necromancer 05-14-2010 07:26 AM

I think that 'Epic' is a classic song/video from the 90s, the guitar solo on that song is outstanding, as far as that goes I think that the band as a whole is kick ass, his vocals could be described as very sassy in my opinion, besides epic I havent heard much of there other music except from the the movie 'Black Hawk Down' which had a song on the soundtrack by faith no more that I liked alot, dont know the title of that one.

TheChosenOne 05-16-2010 07:28 PM

KFADFFAL is massively underrated, Probably my favorite album from them along with Angel Dust.

it's 'Falling to Pieces' from the same album as 'Epic' (the Real Thing), i'm gonna have to bite the bullet one of these days and pick that one up for a 3rd time, maybe if i can find it on vinyl, i'll have owned it on just about every format haha

21stCenturyAndroidMan 06-11-2010 11:37 PM

Saw these guys in feb, they were great. My favourite cd of theirs would have to be king for a day.
