I automatically assume that if you can imagine a style of music, no matter how stupid, someone has done it before.

A lot of music people find inaccessible is not to me, not just the standard prog stuff, but a lot of the avant stuff, Frank Zappa, John Zorn, Brian Eno, The Residents, Henry Cow, Mr. Bungle, it has a big appeal to me. Just because it's incredibly bold and experimental doesn't mean it's hard for me to get into, that's the kinda music I crave to hear.

So for me, the music of Fred Frith and Glenn Branca isn't anywhere near as inaccessible as say, the music of ZZ Top or Bad Company, so accessibility like everything else is a subjective thing.

That is an excellent point.

But if I had to say what I think the most inaccessible artist in the world is, Merzbow gets my vote.

Who woulda thunk Metal Machine Music would become an actual genre?

Some of their albums are very inaccessible, like Meet the Residents, Third Reich n Roll and Eskimo. But my favorite stuff from them, like Duck Stab/Buster & Glen and The Commercial Album, has a very poppy vibe to them.

Have you tried Tweedles? It's a more recent album and a brilliant tip from Jackhammer, it's more laidback but still very weird and touches upon all sorts of genres. It's the most accessible i've heard from them.

I only started listening to the Residents a couple of years ago, because being a Devo fan (their early period) the Residents were recommended to me by a friend.

All this talk of inacessibility and Frank Zappa etc makes me want to pull out and listen to "Trout Mask Replica"
