The Official Megadeth thread

Megadeth

Megadeth in 1986 - Dave Mustaine, Chris Poland, Gar Samuelson (RIP), and David Ellefson

The band already had a thread it was locked up so here's a new one. There was of course a multitude of Megadeth vs. Metallica threads as well but they are stupid and don't count.

Megadeth was formed in the early 80s by Dave Mustaine after he was thrown out of Metallica for being difficult in a variety of ways often involving drugs. Since then and well into the 90s, it's been a drugged up thrash metal ride where band leader Dave who's perhaps a bit of a diva has been in and out of rehab X number of times and band members have come and gone. Despite all this chaos and Dave Mustaine supposedly being an incredibly hard man to work with, they've put out some astonishingly good music over the years. Dave, despite all his problems and demons, has a conscience and an often bleak outlook on life which sometimes flavours their music through lyrics ripe with social/political critique and commentary.

Mustaine's now been clean for a while and announced his christian faith, but they still put out awesome albums. United Abominations from 2007 was kickass and from what I've heard so far, this year's new album "Endgame" sounds very promising.

Anyways, let's celebrate ol' snarly Dave and his group here! What are your favourite songs and albums? Have you ever seen a concert?

One of my favourite songs at the moment is still first track off United Abominations, Sleepwalker. It is absolutely awesome :)

Loved Endgame. It was the heaviest album they have done in years. 1,320' (track 4 of Endgame) is one of the best songs I've heard Megadeth do. Head Crusher also is a great slice of Thrash.
My favourite album from Megadeth really has to be Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? That ranks up there among the greatest all-time metal albums. I reckon it pips Master of Puppets and
Reign in Blood to the post as well, personally.
The song you showed (Sleepwalker off of United Abominations) is probably my favourite off of that album. Pretty much every song on UA I liked (never really much got into 'Burnt Ice'). Rust in Peace also had 2 of my favourite Megadeth songs as well (Holy Wars... The Punishment Due and Tornado of Souls).
I was going to see them with Slayer two weeks ago in Melbourne but the friend I was going with pulled out at the last minute so I ended up cashing in the Tix.

My top 10 favourite Megadeth songs:
1. Holy Wars... The Punishment Due, Rust in Peace
2. Go to Hell, Hidden Treasures
3. 1,320', Endgame
4. Sleepwalker, United Abomination
5. Tornado of Souls, Rust in Peace
6. Gears of War, United Abominations
7. Peace Sells, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying
8. Head Crusher, Endgame
9. Return to Hangar, The World Needs a Hero
10. The Conjuring, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying

One of the guitarists in my band is a complete Megadeth freak and finally managed to get me into the more ballad type/not as heavy metal songs.
I love Trust, Crush 'Em, and A Tout Le Monde ^_^

Risk is probably the only album Megadeth should be ashamed of. Crush 'Em is a disco song.
A Tout le Monde with that chick from Lacuna Coil was good though.

You might like Countdown to Extinction :) It's their best-selling album to date and while some fans criticize it a bit for it's mass appeal, it's still a metal classic. It was also my first Megadeth album so of course I like it quite a bit simply for that reason.

Here's Foreclosure of a Dream, one of the singles from that one :

While Countdown was my first album, the first song I really liked from them was actually 99 Ways to Die from the EP Hidden Treasures from 1995 which contained previously unreleased tracks. The song is a classic track, but the same can't be said for the EP as a whole.

I hate that version! The original is so much better.

Sodacake 10-27-2009 09:34 AM

Yeah, the original is a lot better. I think the newer version is in E standard so it doesn't sound as dark as the original.

Guybrush 10-27-2009 09:41 AM

As far as metal ballads go, I think both versions are good. The original is a bit more feely, but the new duet version speeds things up a little and works better on other levels. All in all, it's basically the same song and the versions are not exactly extremely different. I feel like if the latest hadn't been a duet, the two would've been too similar for the remake to make much sense.

The System has failed from 2004 isn't often mentioned, but it did produce this somewhat listener-friendly gem :

Note that it's a fan vid :)

United Abomination was great, I mean where else are you gonna hear a rocker bitch about the worthless UN. Maybe UA was a bit long, but it was full of great tracks like "Play For Blood".

Yes I love the 'Deth! My live experience with them was last year for the United Abominations tour, Mustaine and co actually passed through Norwich, played the tiny student union... it was truly something to behold. They stormed note-perfect through all the classics and cuts from the new album (which I really enjoyed). It was a humbling experience and was my de facto metal gig (I don't go gigging that often anymore)

it's funny you should start this thread now, I had googled Megadeth this morning for some reason and was summarily underwhelmed by the new single (or maybe it was just the tacky promo video)... also there's a recent Mustaine interview I won't sully the thread by embedding, he seems to have suddenly aged significantly and is in full diva-bitch mode, the entire interview is about Metallica and how James Hetfield once kicked his dog... Depressing to watch =/

Fave album... I have got time for almost all of them (concur with your Tore that System is underrated), but it probably comes down to the obvious ones, the 'Peace' albums. 'Youthanasia' is great too.
