I used to love this band...now I just like them

John Petrucci's playing still blows me away......but those long songs are a little much

don't get me wrong...I love long songs....it's just....when u listen to a long DT song (ex: Octavarium).....at the end ur like "wow....did it need to be that long?"
I like Octavarium...its a good song...but it did not need to be that long

Dream Theater is a great band. While some of the criticism I've read in this thread has some truth to it the band is one of the most solid sound live bands I've ever seen. Also their guitarist, keyboard player and drummer are all considered to be some of the best player of their instrument. There best albums include:
1) Scenes from a Memory
2) Images and Words

But I also like some of there even earlier stuff like When Dream and Day Unite.

It's funny to see what is the main topic of this threads - arguments, arguments, arguments. Well, the first post also wasn't lucky start of the thread

I like them. They aren't something like top 10 for me, but good music. But I have to admit it is up and down - I like some songs a lot, some songs are annoying for me. And voice of James... Hm, not bad but of course I know lot of better voices.

They seem to be one of the most hated bands on these forums!!! I think its got a lot to do, with their fans on here constantly saying how brilliant they are etc and driving them down people`s throats. Personally I love the band and most of their albums, but then again I love groups like Styx and Kansas etc so its kinda logical that DT would do it for me as well.

Ok. I am not blind, I can understand why people don't like voice or lyrics of James. (And I don't like first fanatic post in this thread.)
But I think DT don't deserve to be so hated...

The only person in the band that seems to really get disliked is Jim Petrucci, I don`t often hear too much slagging off for the other members of the band. Personally, I quite like the lyrics of James.

Ergh the title of this thread is just asking for trouble. They're a good band...with pro's and con's to them. I don't think they're quite substantial enough to have that title.

One time, I tried to play Octovarium for a guy who got bored after three minutes...
