I only have three at the moment.

Many of you have chosen good songs. When people are asked this kind of question they automatically think of known guitarists like Jimmi Hendirx, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Slash and Jeff Beck. What about Rush's Alex Lifeson? You dont often hear his name mentioned in top guitarist list's though he has a very unique way of playing. Just listen to the song La Villa Strangiato. Another one of my favourite guitar solos is from Rage Against the Machine songs. Tom Morello is another one of those guitarists who plays in a way that others dont, and that's what i think makes a good guitarists.

Oh yeah I agree, there are many unnamed great guitar gods. I always consider Mark Knopfler one of my top ones, and Tim Reynolds. There are so many more, I agree with that one post before about Omar from The Mars Volta. He writes some brilliant stuff.

That's why I made this post, to find new guitarists to check out. Not just hear Hendrix over and over again. In all honesty Machine Gun is on my top 5 so I can't say anything lol!!

These aren't going to be in order, but these are my personal favorite solos. Probably top 5, although there's a good chance I've completely spaced it and forgotten something.

Anyway:
Phish - Horn

This really may be one of the most beautiful solos I've ever heard in my life, if not the most beautiful. It's really one of those solos I can legitimately feel, very very deeply. Very emotional, wonderful, damn near perfect. Close your eyes and listen; it is lovely.

Richard Thompson - Gethsemane

This is another solo that I believe to be very emotive. It's not especially long, as far as solos go, but it fits the song perfectly, seems to be a continuation of the story RT is telling. Wonderful solo.

Queen - White Queen (As It Began)

One of my favorite things that Brian May has ever played. Simply lovely.

The Who - Love Reign O'er Me

It's probably been apparent that I've been selecting my top 5 solos based on the superb emotive quality of each, not necessarily even going for the most technically "proficient" by a given artist. Then again, I think emotional impact is as good a reason as any to love a piece of music, so I'll stand by it, and I'll stand by this solo.

Good to see that someone else loves that solo as much as I do.

no one will agree with me but i like the solo of "Queen/The Invisible Man". it well expresses the theme of the song itself. i mean, i don know how to explain, but kinda "program music"? the opposite of "absolute music".

Program music tells a story, while absolute music has no descriptive purpose. Generally, program music supports a story, as in opera, ballet or musicals. Which describes, one of Queens attributes artistically, perfectly. I think Queen is somewhat underrated in certain surveys & polls. I personally rank Queen and Freddy Mercury at the top, with most all other popular bands, of the same caliber.

Queen are absolutely one of my favorite bands of all time. I probably know more useless knowledge about Queen than I do about Phish, to be quite honest.

A lot of people I've known to completely discount any of Queen's artistic merit are people who haven't heard more than just the hits, and think "Bohemian Rhapsody" are as experimental as the band's sound got.

While I don't necessarily agree with "The Invisible Man" as having one of the greatest solos of all time (if you want a weird one by Queen I find underrated, check out "Scandal") but it doesn't really get the credit it deserves either.

In my opinion, I suppose.
