I like the vocals too, at least considering screaming metal vocals. I've heard a lot of complaints too.

I'm Seeing Mastodon in February!!! I think their latest album is one of their best to be honest.

After hearing so much about this band from my friends, I decided to give them a listen. I just put "The Hunter" on my iphone, but is there anything else they've done I should check out?

You should of started with Leviathan and Blood Mountain...so yeah. All of their albums should be checked out.

Yes I would start with Leviathan. I think it is the best album in their discography.

There's merit in all their releases, really; it depends on what stage you like them best in.

Listen to Leviathan first, it will make Blood Mountain that much more satisfying.

Mastodon started out really sludgy with Remission, but they've seen a paradigm shift towards a more progressive sound with each album, peaking at Crack the Skye. If I were to assign each album an arbitrary "sludge"/"prog" value, it would look like this
Remission: 9/1
Leviathan: 7/3
Blood Mountain: 5/5
Crack the Skye: 2/8
The Hunter: 5/5

So what you get out of each album really depends on what kind of metal you prefer.
