i dont like them.. i respect them, but dont like them. find them pretty uninteresting. The first album had some awesome riffs on it though.

Default Mastodon; yeah... awesome band

I first caught sight of Mastodon at a Tool gig earlier this year. I was undecided at the time (as one often is when hearing a band's unfamiliar material being played at 270 decibels), but upon many recommendations I thought I'd try my luck with their 2006 album Blood Mountain. Seriously, this is an unbelievable record. It has the odd weak track, but where it shines, it's some genuinely compelling stuff.

Anybody else have some happy-ending Mastodon stories?

I like them on occasion though sometimes their songs just sound like really long drum fills.

Solid band. Overhyped though

blood mountain is an abomination to the mastodon name..
get 'remission' and understand why i say this! i hate their new album, it's weak, boring, the vocals are horrifying, it's unimaginative, whereas remission is packed full of some of THE best riffs you'll ever heard, some of the most intelligent and amazing drumming i've ever heard (and witnessed), and the songs are just 100 times stronger!

i've been REALLY put off of mastodon by their latest output.

shame really as they are fully mint guys, i've been lucky enough to support them with TWO different bands over the years.

Disagree with this. Blood Mountain's just a new direction. It incorporates a huge diversity of styles in it, and does some incredibly imaginative stuff musically. Maybe you haven't listened to it enough, or perhaps you're just a purist who doesn't like change.
