Yeah, Fear Factory would show their groove metal style most starting with "Demanufacture". "Concrete" (which was produced by Ross Robinson, who would become the most prolific Nu-Metal producer later) was basically straight up Death Metal with a slight hint at the industrial sound they would go further into on "Soul of a New Machine". But "Soul..." was the more influential album. Burton C. Bell was basically a pioneer of the vocal style Rob Flynn would do with Machine Head. The Clean vocals and the Death Metal vocals, he was influential in that vocal style which has been copied by many bands since.

Robb Flynn doesn't do much for me though, first Machine Head was about the extent of my love for him, much better than the generic thrash of Vio-Lence.
Vio-Lence may have been generic, but the music was incredibly well executed & entertaining. It's thrash that can hold your attention; excellent riffs, vocals, and well done gang vocals. "Eternal Nightmare" is great album that can be enjoyed even if you don't enjoy thrash; it has stood the test of time wonderfully well.

I suppose they have that. I mean I can listen to that album start to finish and dig it.

I wonder what Forbidden would of been like if Rob Flynn didn't leave to go to Vio-Lence. "Forbidden Evil" is actually a good thrash album.. featuring Paul Bostaph on drums as well... who I think is great.

But yeah, I say go with Fear Factory before Machine Head.

As for the nu-metal, I do not know if I would say Korn was the first... though they were the ones to bring it to the forefront. Biohazard is a band I would give some credit to as well. I do not know who would be considered the influence for the style though... Rage Against the Machine could also be seen as a major influence on the style, Faith No More as well.

I like Fear Factory up until Archetype (although their lyrics are...weak), and I would agree that they had a bigger influence on nu metal than Machine Head. Never been a big Machine Head fan though, mainly because of the vocals (but I will be seeing them live this summer so maybe that will change). Korn had the biggest influence, but like you said funk metal acts like Rage and FNM probably also had some influence.

Geezer Butler's band, this album featured vocals by Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory. Excellent album.
