managed only a cursory listen, really dislike Textures' metalcore leanings, and the throaty singing isn't very good

Enslaved as expected have pretty much mopped up here 6-0. But now Lolpocolypse has left the three strongest albums till last, all three are current heavyweights in metal and to pick a winner from these three will be tough, so how will Enslaved do? I've always loved that Meshuggah album cover as well.

only managed a cursory listen to Meshuggah and thought it was only ok

their earlier stuff i like more, whilst there are some good riffs and the singing is terif, it does tend to get a bit repetitive

while Enslaved is a more enjoyable listen

Every time I listen to Meshuggah, they really grab me at the beginning of each album with Jens Kidman's almost brutal robotic voice and their rhythmic sound, but by the end of each album I've always drifted off and I'm kind of glad the album has ended, their best album is Destroy Erase Improve without doubt and as much lauded as they are, I don't really consider myself as a Mehuggah fan despite often recommending them to people to listen to. Meshuggah's biggest failing is that despite being good they are un-interesting, if I had to listen to one of these two albums again I would choose the Enslaved album.

What can I say, I love the djent style. Instrumentally, I never get bored with Meshuggah, and their use of industrial nuances keeps me engaged for multiple listens. I would say the weakness for Meshuggah is the vocals. They are certainly distinctive, but there isn't much range. I would say they are the main source of monotony for the band. Overall, though, I would definitely say they earned my vote.

Oh golly, the djent-train wins this easily. Yeah, it's monotonous and tiring to listen to a Meshuggah album... but that's why it's awesome. So much anger in such a tightly structured and mind-erasing package. Best served either with extreme attention or as ambient noise-- you can't half ass listening to a Meshuggah album

This was a difficult choice for as both records are progressive for different reasons. For me Obzen is a good album that has some amazing moments (my favorite being the opening riff on "Lethargica") but overall Obzen ranks in the middle of Meshuggah's discography as just a solid entry. Conversely, there are many out there who believe Vertebrae to be Enslaved's greatest work. While you could make that argument for any of their releases post-Monumension, I might be inclined to agree that Vertebrae is in fact their best. The atmosphere and melodic passages meld perfectly with the BM aggression and the production is top notch. Sort of like if Pink Floyd had a love for northern darkness and Odin.

To say Obzen is average is a sin, but there were more "meh" moments on it than there were Vertebrae. So...

Anyone who has a general appreciation of what I do and do not like in regards to music can most likely imagine how I feel about "progressive metal" in general. For those who don't.... it's a genre I go out of my way to avoid.

I haven't listened to the first three Meshuggah albumsin quite some time; but, after listening to this one, I can't say I'm really eager to. This album was downright annoying; the constant "chugga-chugga-chugga" moments, the goddamn dynamic shifts, the lack of quality riffs, etc. It combines all the worst traits of Pantera & The Dillinger Escape Plan. I listened to this abum straight through, but I quit after This Spiteful Snake - I didn't see any point in continuing forward when all the songs sound the same and I couldn't recall any positive moments in any of the tracks.

In regards to Enslaved; I think Frost is an alright album, whereas I find 'Below the Lights' to have a great opening track, the rest of that album is a waste of time. On this album "New Dawn" was ok, I liked the proper metal moments, and the ending synth melody was good. Naturally, the dynamic changes & the song structure annoy me to no end... and that summarizes my opinion of this entire album, quality moments are weighed down & negated by pointless and ill conceived concepts.

What's happening to the "chugga chugga chugga" sound of Meshuggah, I thought they would wrap up easily here, but it seems a number of people on here share my sentiments towards Meshuggah as well.
