In all honesty I have actually never heard a single Motley Crue album. I have heard the songs they play, but never actually have i listened to or bought a single motley crue album. I may be a closet fan and not even know it.... you guys just may be right. However, I do not think I will be crossing that bridge anytime soon and will have to live with the thought I may be a fan and not even know it... . you guys win... I show my white flag and will live with the knowledge you are snickering at me... but at least I know why now.
However, I will admit I think Dr. Feelgood is a pretty kick ass song. 80's cheese is much better in hindsight than it ever was when it was released. Like Europe and "The Final Countdown"... I can just laugh at it now. |

Alright on further reflection I have to give it to Blut Aus Nord. This album takes the generic "Evilness" of black metal and twists it into something genuinely disturbing. When I listen to this album I get a feeling of low grade paranoia and anxiety that can be quite unsettling over time. If you're a bit of a misanthropic nihilist, this is pretty much required listening. Not to mention, I think the album is worth the price of admission just for "Inner Mental Cage" alone.
Blut Aus Nord - 1 Celtic Frost - 0 |
Listened to the Blut Aus Nord album and agree about its nihilistic feel and ambience. I read that its known as a third wave of black metal abum, considering my knowledge of black metal at the moment is limited, I had no other black metal acts save Burzum etc. to really make a good comparison with. All that aside, its probably a better album than the Celtic Frost one due to its unique feel, but its largely an instrumental which is something I normally don`t really dig. For nostalgia I`m still going with Celtic Frost here and my prefence for their overall sound.
Blut Aus Nord 1 Celtic Frost 1 |
I`m changing this battle in the next 24 hrs so place your votes. Now I know there are more than 2 people that know these albums, so try and place your votes soon.
|
i just d/led them
giving them a listen soon |
Monotheist is one of my favorite albums
Celtic Frost 2 Blut As Nord 1 |
Blut Aus Nord borders on genius with their atmospherics and just general aura about their sound, however Celtic Frost's blending of doom and gothic metal on Monotheist was such a step out of their comfort zone and it paid off brilliantly. I believe someone made the comment about Blut Aus Nord's sound being intensely evil, and I agree with that statement wholeheartedly, BUT nothing touches Synagoga Satanae in that regard.
You can't really go wrong with either but: Celtic Frost - 3 Blut Aus Nord - 1 |
ok finally heard both
nice pick - both has an intense wall of noise guitar sound and the lyrics are vaguely Agnostic blut aus nord - the more dissonant of the two, and the atmospherics are good, unlike a certain Count Grishnakh (Burzum), the singing is also very good and some of the tracks are soundtrack-ish celtic frost - brutal and unrelenting, it's certainly different from their usual stuff unnecessary tough call, so i'm flipping a coin - heads - blut, tails - celtic so:- Celtic Frost - 3 Blut Aus Nord - 2 |
Celtic Frost win that battle 3-2. Next up is this mathcore battle from 2007 submitted by The Batlord featuring these two well known bands and hell I love that Colors album:yeah: Again take a few words explaining your choice. BTW in case any are wondering where their submitted battle is, next two after this are from Mondo Bungle and Il Duce.
Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works 2007 http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kj8Gq_BQa5...s_Coverart.jpg Versus Between the Buried and Me Colors 2007 http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JZxFbgmJRt...z123224165.jpg |
Alright, Ire Works kicks ass, but Colors is probably one of my fav albums of all time. I usually don't like albums to be as long as this one is, but Colors is just a musical journey that I can't help but listen to all the way through every time I listen to it. There are just so many moments of perfection and odd mind **** moments that just keep you going until the end.
BTBAM - 1 DEP - 0 |
listening to BTBAM now
so this is what mathcore is? crazy time signature changes? |
ok heard both
BTBAM now i love this, it's technical, maybe extremely so, but it gels into a coherent whole. the jazz and country touched are pure genius. i also completely disagree with the AMG review - monotony because of too many directions. I s'ppose they haven't yet hear Shining's Blackjazz? DEP it starts well enough, reminds me of Coalesce, b-b-b-but then they go lite metal, and it's horrible, i mean if you're gonna emphasise the "mallcore" elements, at least go for something like Shadows Fall, and not Porcupine Tree - geez! so:- BTBAM - 2 DEP -0 |
I need to listen to that Dillinger Escape Plan album before voting. Should do so in the next 24 hours.
|
Porcupine Tree is just as mallcore. Boring band.

He was the worst thing to happen to Opeth, they were a great band before he showed them the light. |
I do not mind Blackwater Park though. I am by no means an Opeth fanatic. But they had their moments.
I just do not see the big deal with Porcupine Tree, not to say they are not without some talent, just it is talent that comes across as boring to me. |
Both of these albums are among the best of their kind, but this is not a hard decision for me. Ire Works is one of my all-time favorite albums.

implying i loathe Porcupine Tree as well |

eh, I think Opeth are ****, but I do like some Porcupine Tree. I see no reason to disparage "Lightbulb Sun" just because Opeth have never figured out how to write song that seems anything other than disjointed.
|
Ok I`ve listened to the Ire Works album and its a very good album but it still doesn`t come near to topping Colors. I mean Colors is an album that comes around like once every ten years. Its mixture of eclectic sounds that hit the listener unexpectedly is its main delight and they way they mix in those Beatlesque style melodies into some songs is amazing. Colors is a work of art whereas Ire Works is just a great album.
BTBAM 3 DEP 1 |
Maiden!

Good job, dumbass. |
^^i suppose he/she thinks there is only one battle here for the entire thread
|
Between the Buried and Me take that battle 3-1. Next up are these choices by Mondo Bungle with these two extreme progressive metal albums with a heavy jazz influence.
Atheist Unquestionable Presence 1991 http://www.purerockradio.net/request...e-Presence.jpg Versus Cynic Focus 1993 http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/images/Cyn-Focus.jpg |
i have that Atheist but haven't heard it yet
lemme do so and i'll get back to you ok heard it:- i have to say i love both albums completely and initially, jazz-fusion metal doesn't make much sense to me but i've grown to like it Atheist the more "conventional" of the two, the guitars are still pretty much in the death metal tradition, with the rhythm section showing traces of jazz and even funk, the vocals are a bit too clean for my liking, and i don't really like the scales of the solos, which are often Lydian and Mixolydian in the death metal tradition Cynic this one is love at first listen, the vocals generally creepy, and the jazz elements stronger, sounding they've been listening a lot to Mahavishnu Orchestra, a lot of stuff here done which I thought was never possible in metal so:- Cynic - 1 Atheist - 0 |
Atheist - 1
Cynic - 1 I've given Focus a few more listens, and I can greatly appreciate the music, but the vocoder ruins it. Early Cynic demos are great, though. UP is just brilliant, and basically no effects outside the backing soundscapes(which make the atmosphere that much greater.) |
This was my first listen of the Cynic album and despite it being accomplished and highly regarded, it left me feeling somewhat deflated whereas the Atheist album is an album I`ve always liked and its their second best as only Elements is better.
Atheist 2 Cynic 1 |
This is a hard choice. I'd say just from a straight forward quality standpoint (this coming from a non-musician who knows jack **** about jazz or jazz fusion) Atheist take it, but I've got to go with Cynic just for originality. Atheist are a different death metal band, but still a death metal band. I don't know what you'd call Cynic. 'Specially after Traced In Air, which also is brilliant.
Atheist - 2 Cynic - 2 |

This battle stands at 2-2, if you haven`t voted and know both albums then somebody break the deadlock so I can put the next battle up.

^^aren't ties allowed?

I'm listening through the two albums now, will cast vote soon

The Cynic album felt exhausting to listen to. The Atheist one is delicious though
Atheist 3 Cynic-2 |
Atheist win that one 3-2 thanks to Unrelenting breaking the deadlock. Finally after a long wait is this black/death metal showdown from Norway courtesy of Il Duce.
