Metal Wars!!!!!!!!!!!

I think its about time that we had a "Metal Wars" thread on this forum to run in conjuction with the "Album Wars" thread in the general music section so I`ve decided to start this thread. Now and again metal albums were selected in that thread, but due to the lack of people interested in metal on there they never got that many votes. Now I know there are plenty of metalheads and metal devotees in this section to make it work so PM me your choices.

Basically it will work the same as "Album Wars" but featuring just metal bands or hard rock bands and nobody else! The battles can be a 2 album head to head or a 3 album head to head battle and the whole thing is always more interesting if there is a link between the albums that somebody chooses, for example death metal, 70`s metal, alternative metal etc.....there are a multitude of metal genres out there to choose from. The battles will last 3/4 days depending on how many votes they get etc.... So PM me your choices and I will put them up on a first come first served basis, with other peoples choices joining a queue. If nobody sends me their album selections then I`ll nominate the albums.

So get sending your choices to me by PM. If anybody is not familiar on how these battles work check out the "Album Wars" thread to see how it works:thumb:

First ever battle on here is courtesy of The Batlord he of the armpit fetish. Its none other than a NWOBHM showdown between two of the best albums of the genre. Good choices considering that a NWOBHM thread has just gone up today. As always when placing your vote, take a few lines to say why you chose the album.

I love Saxon, and especially Wheels of Steel with a passion, but Iron Maiden's debut is just almost perfect. It's rock, punk, and metal in all the right places. So, Maiden for me.

I like this thread. I have not listened to the Saxon album, so can not vote at this time, but I doubt it will live up the perfection of the Iron Maiden album. As Batlord said, good mix of Rock, Punk and Metal... I really enjoy Paul Di'Anno's vocals.. I think he was great.

I will trake a listen to the Saxon album at some point at get back to ya. But I have a feeling I already know it wont live up to the Maiden record.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with early Saxon. They've got some of my fav riffs of all time. The song "Wheels of Steel" still makes my head bang ten years after I first heard it.

LoathsomePete 07-27-2011 02:10 PM

Very tough choice, both are top contenders for my favourite NWOBHM albums but I think I might have to go with Saxon on this one. If it were which band I preferred it would have been Maiden without a doubt, but as far as Maiden albums go, my love has always been Killers and onward, because that's how I went about listening to their discography. My opinion of the band was already cemented when I came back and listened to their self-titled album, and while I enjoyed it immensely, I was already a big fan of the band and I think that spark was lost. When it came to listening to Wheels of Steel it was something new for me and ultimately left a greater impression. Saxon wins by virtue of being the first one I listened to.

Iron Maiden - 2
Saxon - 1

Time to place my vote here as well and to be fair The Batlord summed it up perfectly, as I also love the Saxon album with a passion but the Maiden album is perfect with its punk and metal mixture. Had Saxon come up against any other metal album of that time period I`m certain Saxon would have won.

Iron Maiden 3
Saxon 1

Same here. I heard Killers before the debut and it is still probably my favourite Maiden album and I heard Saxon at virtually the same time with both Wheels Of Steel and Strong Arm Of The Law getting plenty of listens.

Maiden's debut is much raw sounding and obviously has some classics: Prowler, Phantom Of The Opera etc but the production wasn't great (something the band have always stated) and it lacks a little cohesion to me but then I much prefer Strong Arm Of The Law to Wheels Of Steel from Saxon even though Wheels Of Steel has the magnificent 747 (Strangers In The Night) on it. I will have to plump for Maiden. Just.

Iron Maiden 4
Saxon 1

I promise not to cheat on this one, although it is hard to resist!:D

I have to go with Iron Maiden.

almauro 07-29-2011 04:34 PM

You gotta pair Saxon up against another big dumb lovable metal band like Accept not Maiden's debut, which is a very special record. 6 to one....Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden win that one by a hefty 6 votes to 1. 2nd ever battle on here is courtesy of Mondo Bungle whose name always reminds me of the Tubes song Mondo Bondage! Its a grassroots death metal face-off. So place your votes and take a few lines explaining your choice.

Mondo Bungle 07-29-2011 05:26 PM

Even though I'm more of a Seps fan, I'll take Seven Churches. It's production was better, and imo had a bigger influence on the genre.

LoathsomePete 07-29-2011 05:40 PM

Pretty much what Mondo said, I prefer Sepultura to Possessed any day of the week, but Possessed had much better production and yeah... it had a greater influence on the American death metal scene then Morbid Visions did.

Possessed - 2
Sepultura - 0

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-29-2011 05:50 PM

I finally got around to hearing Seven Churches a couple of years ago for the first time and I remember being really disappointed by it.
From what I had been led to believe about it I would be listening to something on a par with an album like Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales.
Nothing about it really stood out for me.

I can't remember a single thing about Morbid Visions so i'll pass on this vote.

BastardofYoung 07-29-2011 06:14 PM

Possessed 3
Sepultura 0

Both were influential in defining what would become Death Metal down the road. But Possessed takes it, better musicianship, better production and just all around better atmosphere. Sepultura would reach their creative peak with "Beneath the Remains" which came later.. but Possessed hit in right from the start.

almauro 07-29-2011 06:56 PM

Bestial Devastation would have won, IMO. Possessed 4 Sepultura 0

hip hop bunny hop 07-29-2011 07:47 PM

Sepultura, because "Troops of Doom" is one of the best death metal songs ever written. That song alone can elevate the stature of any album.

Captain Americana 07-29-2011 09:47 PM

Maiden hands down!

So you mean to say:
Possessed: 4
Sepultura: 1

I've gotta go with Seven Churches because .. I simply like it more.

Possessed: 5

You're doing it wrong. Maiden already won.

i'm making a trip to the specialist metal stores tomorrow

i'll see if they have that Possessed and Sepultura

i have Arise and Chaos A.D.

Unknown Soldier 07-30-2011 04:22 AM

Morbid Visions is seriously getting it arse kicked on here:D I hate to mirror everybody else`s opinions but Possessed got it right straight away with Seven Chruches and that album must have sounded brutal for 1985! Whilst Morbid Visions sounds like a demo done in a spare bedroom. Also Morbid Visions is pre-Andreas Kisser and it was when he arrived that things really got moving for Seps. Also that Morbid Visions album cover is so f*ucking bad if defies belief:laughing:

Possessed 6
Sepultura 1

Is the Seven Churches cover any better though? I'm particularly intrigued by the decision to use that faux-Chinese typeface.

BastardofYoung 07-30-2011 10:33 AM

It is not the best cover for Sepultura..... but compared to "Bestial Devestation" it is a masterpeice..

http://en.metalship.org/archives/albums/album16857.jpg

just awesome...

The Batlord 07-30-2011 11:00 AM

I'd have to go with Sepultura on this one. It's definitely not their best, but it speaks to me much in the same way that Hell Awaits does. It has this primitive, ugly, atmospheric quality to it that I dig. Seven Churches on the other hand, I've never been a big fan of. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. It just kinda sounds noisy to me. It has flashes of brilliance, but half the time it just sorta sounds like they were making noise without really worrying about whether or not it sounded good.

Possessed: 6
Sepultura: 2

Side Note: You know I was actually going to suggest almost this same thing. Except it was going to be Seven Churches and Death's Scream Bloody Gore. Great minds think alike I guess.

Its also bad but at least its kind of basic, whereas that Morbid Visions cover, looks like a real low budget 3-D type effect that went badly wrong.

That was for an EP....but they should have known better for an album cover!

I think the problem is that entire cover, including the type, was done with an airbrush. That's why it looks like something you'd get painted on a t-shirt in some booth at a county fair.

It wasn`t a reference to the album, but more of a reference to hearing voices inside your head from these albums:laughing:

As for Slayer, even a poor Slayer album is still a great listen! I love the group that much.

BastardofYoung 07-30-2011 04:16 PM

Hell Awaits is my favorite Slayer album.

jackhammer 07-30-2011 05:32 PM

I don't like either I'm afraid. Both have an amateurish quality that I just can't seem to overcome and I have to be in the mood to listen to Possessed's Beyond The Gates too. Both important albums and they have many fans but both smack of a band trying to find their identity.

Abstain.

Unknown Soldier 07-31-2011 04:00 AM

Ok Possessed win that one 6-2. Next up courtesy of Loathsome Pete who shares his home with Old Nick, is the Strapping Young Lad thrash/industrial magnum opus versus the Fear Factory groove/industrial magnum opus, as always take a few lines explaining your vote.

Strapping Young Lad wins it easily for me. They're quirky and fun while Fear Factory is just dull. I feel like I need to point that neither have much of anything to do with industrial though.

City: 1
Demanufacture: 0

I don't know maybe "metal with slight electronic touches". I just don't see them as having much in common with the likes of Throbbing Gristle or Einstürzende Neubauten.

I always think FF as being a combo of death, groove and industrial, and a band like Ministry as being full blown industrial metal.

I've never really gotten into Devin Townsends music from the albums I've heard and I really can't seem to remember too much about the City album either, I'm even wondering now if I've even heard it:confused:. From you saying it wins hands down, and wiki saying its one of the best metal albums of the 90s, this will have me giving it a listen later on today. As for the FF album I think that is a classic, making me even more intrigued now to listen to the City album.
