I know there are some more votes pending out there for these two albums, so place them as I`m changing this battle over within the next 24 hrs, for the other two Swedish death metal albums!

The Batlord 09-20-2011 10:45 AM

It was a hard choice, but like Metal Connoisseur said, LHP just has a more evil edge to it.

Entombed - 4
Unleashed - 1

BastardofYoung 09-20-2011 01:54 PM

yeah. listened to them both yesterday and forgot to add the vote.

Entombed - 5
Unleashed - 1

What needs to be said has already been said, all I would do is back up what MC said and the above said...

Left Hand Path is just a brilliant album, their best. Unleashed was a great listen again, just not as interesting as Entomed.

Only album I would have voted about it as I said was "Like an Ever Flowing Stream" by Dismember.

Are you psychic? That album is up for the very next battle.:yikes:

BastardofYoung 09-20-2011 05:15 PM

it is just a major one, probably the first to pop into most swedish death metal fans heads when you just say swedish death metal. It, as well as "Dark Recollections" by Carnage.

damn you for quoting my error as well, should say "above" not "about". I need to do better proof reading.

Unknown Soldier 09-20-2011 06:57 PM

Entombed win that 5-1, next up is the second part of The Batlord death metal line-up. Again take a few words explaining your choice.

BastardofYoung 09-20-2011 07:17 PM

ahhhh Grave, that was what I figured it would be. I just listened to Dismember today, so just gotta listen to Grave now.... but I have a feeling I already know my answer.

I listened to the Grave album for the first time today and was really impressed with it and I`d say it was better than the Unleashed album but not quite as good as the Entombed album. Will listen to the Dismember album tomorrow.

BastardofYoung 09-20-2011 09:46 PM

I am predicting your vote will go to Dismember...

After the current battle there are 3 lined up (metal connoisseur, batlord, mondo bungle) It should come up in about a weeks time..........but send it anyways as I`m intrigued to see what it is.

The Batlord 09-21-2011 11:08 AM

Alright, Grave was ****ing awesome, but I gotta go with Dismember. I wasn't expecting Like And Everflowing Stream to be that good, but it kinda blew me away. It just has such good grooves, but it's not just some groovy death metal album. Even with the grooves, it still manages to have this creepy sort of atmosphere. It's got kind of a Maiden thing going on with the solos sometimes too. It all sorta comes together in way that perfectly combines brutality and melody.

Edit: Not to mention "Override of the Overture" is one of the sickest opening songs I've heard in a minute.

Dismember - 1
Grave - 0

Unknown Soldier 09-21-2011 04:02 PM

I`ve listened to the Dismember album a couple of times now and fuck what can I say about it!!! Not only is this probably the best death metal album I`ve ever heard, but also one of the best metal albums I`ve ever heard. The whole album is full of frenzied death metal with the guitaring to match. The whole thing sounds like the death metal equivalent of Reign in Blood with its intensity that few bands can match. I loved the Grave album but none of these can top Dismember.

Dismember- 2
Grave- 0

BastardofYoung 09-21-2011 04:12 PM

did I call that, or did I call that.

Well you got that spot on. That album was so good it got me all hot, sweaty and excited just listening to it and only Sepultura can normally do that.

BastardofYoung 09-21-2011 04:18 PM

As I said... it was the only one I would pick over Entombed.

Try that Carnage record "Dark Recollections" as well if you have not, Carnage was basically just pre-Dismember. Not as good as Dismember, but it is still a good release in the world of Swedish Death Metal

I listened to that Carnage album before the Dismember album just out of curiosity, it was good but nothing exceptional and in no way prepared me for the onslaught of the Dismember album.

I`ve also been listening to Carcass and love that Necroticism album, especially its concept on how to economically despose of dead bodies:rofl:

BastardofYoung 09-21-2011 04:39 PM

their best album. In my top 5 favorite DM albums of all-time.

What are your top 5? And are you talking just DM or technical DM here?

BastardofYoung 09-21-2011 04:56 PM

Death Metal in general.

I will have to think more... I mean I know Carcass, Deicide and Dismember would make my top 5... havent thought of the other yet, haha.... and it would change day to day probably.

But I would probably go

Carcass - Necrotism....
Deicide - Legion
Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream

the other 2.... would have to put more though into...

Based on all I`ve heard so far probably in this order for straight up Death Metal and leaving out the technical death metal stuff:

Dismember- Like an Ever Flowing Stream
Death- Leprosy
Obituary- Cause of Death
Immolation-Dawn of Possession
Entombed- Left Hand Path

Hell 2 of these albums I heard for the first time just in the last couple of days, the other 2 in the last couple of months, The Death album is the only album I always knew.

Mondo Bungle 09-21-2011 05:32 PM

Death - Symbolic
Bolt Thrower - The VII Crusade
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm
diSEMBOWELMENT - Transendence Into the Peripheral

yeah

yeah

There`s three there I don`t know, will look them up.

Anyways you forgot to vote Dismember or Grave:finger:

Mondo Bungle 09-21-2011 06:01 PM

Dismember - 3
Grave - 0

That is easily the best Grave album, but I still wouldn't take it over the sheer awesomeness of Like An Everflowing Stream.

BastardofYoung 09-21-2011 08:11 PM

so listened to Grave earlier. Though it did have a good sound, and a great flow.... just, that Dismember album is amazing and in my opinion the very high point of the Swedish Death Metal scene.

so

Dismember - 4
Grave - 0

*The IVth Crusade ;)

Eh, I knew it was some Roman numeral. 7 popped into mind.

get Reek of Putrefaction and Symphonies of Sickness as well

they're grindcore but the medical terminology and what they explain about the process of autopsy is hellishly morbidly funny

I know. I was expecting it to be good, but not that good. I figured Entombed would have the better album since they're talked about more. I guess they get the nod just for being more infuential because they sort of kick started the whole Swedish death metal thing.

Metal Connoisseur 09-22-2011 04:51 PM

The sludgy grooves on the Grave album were sick, but what needed to be said about the Dismember album has already been said.

Grave - 0
Dismember - 5

As a side, the past few battles involving death metal albums have all been really great and I feel as though I'm acquiring a taste for death metal more and more. In the past I respected it but had decided it really wasn't my thing. It's nice to see forum participation paying dividends in terms of exposing me to new music.

BastardofYoung 09-22-2011 04:55 PM

yeah, i like to think that when most people disregard Death Metal they are only basing it on the sound of one or two bands they are familiar with. But there is greatness in it, like any other style.

Yes, and it doesn't help that the Hot Topic scenesters identify with Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under...I'll be honest and say that was one large deterrent for me

BastardofYoung 09-22-2011 05:17 PM

I like Cannibal Corpse. But they still do not rank amongst my favorites by any means (though my last.fm probably says differently, as they are my most played DM band.. but that is just cause I have been listening to them to catch up). They have some great moments, but they are not the only DM band in the world like some seem to like to think.

Can't deny their influence, but once you dive deeper into the style you realise what they influenced has been done better over the years.

But when it comes to a lot of Death Metal, especially the Brutal Death Metal scene that they helped shape.. you will notice that there are many bands who still just rip them off. Seems like the majority of BRutal DM bands now are either trying to be Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation.

Unknown Soldier 09-23-2011 04:31 AM

Ok Dismember win that 5-0. Next up courtesy of Metal Connoisseur are these two albums from European extreme metal acts. Celtic Frost who need no introduction and Blut Aus Nord from France. Again take a few words explaining your choice.

Me too. While they have moments of brilliance, I think they're most useful as a gateway band to death metal. I mean just about everyone knows them. Even people who don't listen to metal at all have usually at least heard of them, they're probably the first DM band most people hear, and they have a sound that pretty much encapsulates death metal in a nutshell, so they're sort of like the death metal ambassadors. You know, maybe we should send the Corpsegrinder to negotiate an Israeli/Palestinian peace treaty.

The Batlord 09-23-2011 09:42 AM

Dude, I love this battle. Monotheist is quite possibly Celtic Frost's best album (which is amazing as it's a reunion album) and The Work Which Transforms God has pretty much single handedly revived my interest in black metal. I will have to give Monotheist another listen. I think this will be a hard choice.

I agree about Monotheist its one muuuther of an album and possibly one of the best ever metal releases of the 00`s, I mean their mixture of gothic and doom influences are amazing mixed in with an eastern influenced sound at times (Tiamat were doing similiar stuff at that time as well) And the heaviness of the album, contrasting with the female sung parts is perfect as well.

Is this the best Celtic Frost album? Well its a toss up between this and the Morbid Tales album but as you said, this is a reunion album and reunion albums shouldn`t be this great:laughing:

Can`t vote yet as I know jack shit about the other album:laughing:

LoathsomePete 09-23-2011 12:36 PM

Crap... this is a hard one. I follow the very unpopular opinion that Monotheist (2006) is the best Celtic Frost album but The Work Which Transforms God (2003) is also one of the best black metal releases of the last decade.... You know I'll have to come back to this one, cause it's fucking hard. It's like having to decide which of your two children lives, and they're both beautiful.
