ok have heard all three:-
Nocturnus well, i didn't like the keys being so understated - it could have been a great symphonic death metal record if it were more overt. otherwise, the "melodies" are great, the riffs distinctive and the solos are great Malevolent Creation i like the short sharp riffs and the vocals are the just the right balance of "cookie" and clean. but i still like Nocturnus over this.... Monstrosity the cookie vocals are great but i feel this one's too generic by-the-numbers death so:- Malevolent Creation - 2 Nocturnus - 3 Monstrosity - 1 |
If you want to vote on this tight battle, do it within the next 24 hrs as there are a lot of pending battles building up.
@Il Duce did you check out any videos of Nocturnus? Singer Mike Browning is impressive whilst growling and drumming at the same time. |

listening to Cream's Wheels of Fire atm |

That`s a good Cream album but it gets less attention than the debut and their most famous release Disreali Gears |

but let's not hijack this thread :D |
Malevolent Creation is the winner here for me. It is a balanced album that touches on the right amount of every thing from groovy riffs, shred, blast beats, and harsh vocals with no element over powering the other. The keyboards found on The Key might have been innovative for the time but after a while, it felt like the songs were blurring into one another. And as for Monstrosity, it was just average to me. Nothing to write home about.
So... Malevolent Creation - 3 Nocturnus - 2 Monstrosity - 1 |
^^it's actually:-

Oh ****, we now have a draw!!! unless somebody who hasn`t voted casts a winning vote.
|
Yeah, my fault. Somebody break the tie.

We`ve had one draw before Motley Crue v WASP which was 5-5 so no problem. |
I`m certain no more votes will come for these albums now, as most of the regulars on here into this type of metal have already voted, these albums are hardly for your casual listener:laughing: So its 3-3-1 in favour of both Malevolent Creation and Nocturnus. Next up courtesy of Alfred his debut on here, are these two very recent albums. One from one of my fav modern day metal bands and the other from an interesting sounding metal band from Norway.
Kylesa Static Tensions 2009 http://www.svartrecords.com/shoppe/3...ensions-lp.jpg Versus Kvelertak Kvelertak 2010 http://www.keepitfast.com/wp-content...ertakcover.jpg |
I haven't heard either of these albums, and I haven't even heard of the second band. I'll hold my vote for when I get around to listening to them within the next day or so.

Heh. A John Baizley album cover theme!

I haven't heard either of these albums so I'll have to give them a listen.
Thank God for this thread. It is the only reason I get on here anymore. With football playoffs and all, I just don't have enough time to listen to all these albums. All the albums that have come up have been good though, so I am at least keeping track of the ones I haven't heard. |
That Kylesa album is killer, I'm excited to listen to the other one now
|
Kylesa - 1
Kvelertak - 0 Both start with K, both covers illustrated by whatshisname from Baroness, both have excellent drumming, but I think Kylesa edges out the win for being more palatable, shorter, and more tightly executed. Kvelertak is all over the place genre-wise and it's definitely an interesting listen but the vocals never let up (which is a bad thing in this case) and as a whole it doesn't seem very cohesive. Granted, I've listened to Static Tensions several times now and I just finished listening to Kvelertak for the first time so standby for a possible change of opinion |

I think you'll like it-- it's fast and angry

Kylesa - 1
Kvelertak - 1 Kylesa is good, but Kvelertak is insanely good. |
I've only heard that Kylesa album a handful of times and it was important enough for me to want to grab, but that Kvelertak debut was really something else. It made it into my car last August and I don't think made it out until end of September when Enslaved's newest made it in (and stayed there 'til November when Agalloch's newest came out). I also don't think last year's follow up to Static Tensions was really that worthy, so I'm going to have to go with Kvelertak on this one.
Kvelertak - 2 Kylesa - 0 |
Voting should be:
Kylesa 1 Kvelertak 2 |

Alright, I'm only into track three of the Kvelertak album, but they win. They ****ing win by a mile. I figured Kylesa would win this battle easy. I love Static Tensions. But this...is truly ****ing pwning my soul right now. This is music tailor made to put a **** eating grin on your face. I almost wanna say it doesn't belong in a metal album battle, cause it mainly sounds like really quirky hardcore. I can hear the metal, along with a bunch of other influences I can't really place yet, but this sounds closer to hardcore than metal. **** it, I don't give a ****!
And I thought Coffinworm would be the best band I discovered today. It's not very often I discover two bands I dig this much in one day. Kvelertak - 3 Kylesa - 1 Edit: Alright, I'm on song eight, and every song has been as brilliant as the last. This is the best album this thread has turned me onto yet, and one of the best albums I've heard in years. If this album loses, I'm gonna hack this site and remove it from existence...after I learn how to be a hacker of course. |
Kvelertak - 3
Kylesa - 2 Kvelertak's debut is a really, really fun (and catchy) album, but Kylesa win this for me. It's just a more interesting album to me, and that filthy pummeling sludge sound gets me every time. Also, the artwork is better. :P |

It's a very unique album, you won't regret checking it out. There's a 90% chance it will put a big fat smile on your face. :)
|
Kvelertak - 4
Kylesa - 2 I didn't expect to like the album as much as I did. Both records are amazing, though. |
Ok guys no more new album suggestions for at least 2 weeks, as the queue is getting way to looooooong now!!!:thumb:
The queue as it stands after the current battle: Bastard King Matt Mondo Bungle Unrelenting The Batlord |

I'm really surprised to see people describing the Kvelertak album as hardcore-ish. It doesn't even remotely sound like hardcore to me, all I could think while listening to it was that it sounds like some hybrid of cock rock and grunge with extreme metal vocals. I was fairly underwhelmed unfortunately. I've only given it one listen though, maybe I'll like better on second spin.
|
I`m a big fan of Kylesa and you normally know what you`re going to get with them, like Slayer their style hardly changes and the consistency remains high. Static Tensions is a good album but not as good as the previous two To Walk a Middle Course and Time Will Fuse its Worth But all in all Static Tensions is good enough to win most battles........but this is not most battles.
I`ve just finished listening to the Kvelertak debut and fuck what an album.:yikes: This album is extreme metal mixed up with the heavier excesses of grunge, other musical influences have been thrown in and for very good measure there are some classic 1970s hard rock riffs thrown in (I`ve always been addicted to 1970s riffs so thats done it for me) I even detected on one song very briefly some Jon Lord (Deep Purple) type keyboards! The whole thing then has the death n roll feel thrown in. I already have a feeling.... that I`ve just listened to one of the classic metal albums of the last couple of years if you can actually call it metal, as this is one revved up rock n roll monster that doesn`t let up for a second. Kvelertak 5 Kylesa 2 |
I honestly do not hear the grunge at all. To me it sounds like a blend of hardcore punk and hard rock, with a heavy, almost tongue-in-cheek dose of black metal. What a sound, though.
Glad those who hadn't heard it before liked it so much. :) |
something at the back of my mind keeps telling me that i'll enjoy neither so uh, no thx
