For quite a while I've considered Death Metal to be one of the more dull sub-genres. It's usually got too much guitar wanking for me and blast beats tend to get on my nerves after a few songs. But I do like Gorguts and, well, I didn't know much about Ulcerate before this but I like the cover art.

I listened to Vermis first and was pretty sure that Gorguts would not top it. The vocals were just right. The beats were interesting, no speedy guitar solos, and there were plenty of spaced out "atmospheric" interludes. The album flows really well and it reminded me of other genre-defying heavy bands that I love. Very pleased overall, and I definitely will get more of their stuff.

Then I put on Colored Sands and was turned off by a few small things. The vocals were good but not as good as Vermis. The drums were kind of low in the mix, and I thought there were too many little "proggy" parts and guitar leads interlaced. But as the album went on it really came together for me. I was really into by about the halfway mark and my interest only rose.

Gorguts made a solid album that is very dynamic compared to the even-tempered chugging of the Ulcerate album. Both albums have earned Death Metal a higher spot on my list of priorities. But I like Vermis a lot more in general.

Ulcerate: 5
Gorguts: 0

Wow. Ulcerate took that one.

To me, I went into it thinking I was going to cast my vote for Gorguts as well. But I wound up getting hooked more on Ulcerate as well. I like the atmosphere more, and find it the one that will get more replay value overall.

So I have to go and give it the final nod and say:

Ulcerate: 6
Gorguts: 0

I told Mondo Bungle he could have the next round, and put his up for the next week.

So if he sees this, you can put up your battle, and give us in your own words what it is all about.

Hella

So this METAL WAR!!!!!!!!!!!! is bringing some dissonance. Just copying what I already PM'd BoY,

Abyssal - Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius

Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius | Abyssal

Takes that Portal sound, but makes it awesomer. Instead of a seemingly endless barrage of noise riffs and dissonance, this is a huge, monstrous piece of blackened death/doom, with all the atonality you can handle.

VS

Dephosphorus - Ravenous Solemnity

Ravenous Solemnity | DEPHOSPHORUS

That whole dissonant style, but converted into a faster, easier approach. They call themselves "astrogrind".

Abyssal: This album is massive in riffs, massive in atmosphere, and massive in well...mass. It's as heavy as a ****ing dying star. It's a bit of a long one, but not at all hard (for me) to get through. I'm personally a big fan of the drum sound here, not louder than any other albums by any means, but somehow I find it much more audible. In terms of standout tracks, I'd name one of the shorter ones (excluding sub-minute interludes), "The Headless Serpent", "As Paupers Safeguard Magnates", and "The Last King". I think it's more memorable as a whole album, featuring many awesome standout moments. Like the jazzy bit about 5 minutes into "The Last King", which is a spectacular closer, and the weird licking found in "As Paupers Safeguard Magnates".

Dephosphorus: This starts right away, no messing around. It's an easier listen, for myself and most likely others as well. It has an interesting vocal approach, a sort of strained howling, not like other extreme metal vocals. The Greek accent also makes it pretty cool . Melodies are a lot more discernible and plentiful, not relying as much on harsh dissonance. This album is generally mid-paced to blastbeat-fast, rarely delving into such slow doom-laden passages as heard on the Abyssal album. There's even some fantastic grooves to be found, such as in "Ancient Drone" and "Storming the Sloan Wall". It still evokes it's own atmosphere, just not nearly as thick and evil as Abyssal's. This is a more cosmic/metaphysical sort of thing. The lyrics, which are focused heavily on space and astrophysics, help with that. Some standouts I'd mention: "Ancient Drone", "A Fountain of Daggers", "Vicious Infinite Regress", "False Vacuum", among others.

I'd say....

Dephosphorus - 1
Abyssal - 0

That's just me, the Abyssal album is great, but a hefty chunk of metal. Dephosphorus offers more "listen-again" value from me, and is right up my alley.

This war has a clear winner for me.

I like both of the albums. Both are interesting hybrids but are very different. The Abyssal album combines several metal genres cohesively. The Dephosphorus album combines 80s thrash/hardcore vocals with more current metal trends. On paper that makes Dephosphorus look pretty good. It's almost like a more metal version of SOD, and maybe that's what they are, but for me it gets old well before the album is over.

I prefer the more classic blackened death/doom styling of Abyssal.

Abyssal: 1

Dephosphorus: 1
