To be honest, in thrash metal I do not see that as a huge deal. At some point everything can start sounding like something else. Its better to just listen to everything individually and on its own than worry about who is trying to copy what. SOme just do it better or worse, but like Hardcore punk, most all great bands are just clones of another.

You misunderstand. The Batlord is slowly warming to darkness descends, and I constantly spam it in this thread to get him to like it.

And yeah, everybody stole riffs in the 80s.

Bro, if you only ever listen to one Machine Head album then listen to Burn My Eyes. Don't listen to the poseurs. They may have improved their songwriting chops later, but they never had half of the aggression as on their debut.

The riffs are not nearly as good and I'm honestly confounded that you would even say that. I'm convinced that you're simply not getting Eternal Nightmare if you like any Vio-lence album more than EN. And while I like Darkness Descends more than I used to I'm pretty sure I'll never like it anywhere near as much as I do Eternal Nightmare, which is as I said one of the best metal albums ever recorded and one I get on a primal level, and while I can see the resemblance with that song, Vio-lence did it totally better.

I have strange opinions, don’t you know?

These riffs rip it up so hard, and the drumming is fantastic.

Yes that song is god(less). Basically the template for Pantera. The more I go on the more I agree that Pantera didn't so much ripoff Exhorder, but they definitely took a very large chunk of their sound from them almost as is.

Seriously though, it's like they didn't even try writing good riffs.

Images & Words isn't really about the riffs (though 'Under A Glass Moon' and 'Learning To Live' have their moments). It's about the solos and Kevin Moore's fantastic synths.

If you want prog-metal from the early 90's with more serious riffage, check out Last Crack.

A great album

Their previous album "Obsessed by Cruelty" was black metal influenced, which they would drop for "Persecution Mania", which is the vastly better album.
