I think it's a good song. The chorus is slightly derpy (that robot voice in the background is the main source of derp), but otherwise I can't complain. I like most of the songs better than this one. Seems to me there's always a certain point after which most people just dislike any band's output for no particular reason (usually after the first 5 or so albums). I think this album is solid if it actually gets a fair chance like the early albums do. Same take I'd have on tonnes of other bands.

I just think that after Youthanasia Dave started running out of good song ideas and could only put together a handful of truly solid songs and then surround them with decent ones or just filler. I'm fine with his stylistic changes up until he cynically started trying to court his old fanbase. The last time he came close to a legitimately great album was Risk. Even Cryptic Writings has too much filler.

I think that's just because it's common for artists to overstay their welcome by phoning it in for cash or to finish out a contract. If I were to judge TWNAH like I do their early material, I'd say they should stop trying to be a pop group.

They should also stop trying to be a thrash group. I say Dave should chuck all the expectations out the window and just try to make one album he actually gives a **** about and if that fails let's end the farce and he can become a producer or something. They really did have success as a pop group though. They just weren't particularly consistent.

Super Collider feels like an album Dave cared about to me. It's full of musical references to bands that inspired him, like Kiss and Thin Lizzy. People hated it, so Dave made Dystopia next, which was ostensibly an attempt to give people what they want.

Just take this track from The System Has Failed. An album of mostly bland thrash with moments of goodness but only one absolute belter of a pop metal song that could have come from Cryptic Writings and is probably Megadeth's best song of the entire new millenium. Dave Mustaine can be a stellar pop songwriter when he wants to be.

The System Has Failed has some great stuff on it, especially "Back in the Day":

I think having the expectations of them never being able to reach the quality of their first three albums helps with my enjoyment. I thought Dystopia was an excellent album.

That is a good track, even if it's super self-important. Like Dave saw that a bunch of kids were discovering thrash and felt the need to promote his legacy.

Also I'm checking out United Abominations for the first time in a while and "Blessed Are the Dead" is a song I forgot as being really solid.

I agree on Die Dead Enough.

Tears in a Vial and Of Mice and Men are two other favourites of mine from that album. I basically prefer Mustaine in pop song writer mode these days. The thrash lacks a bit of bite.

Honestly, I always preferred that side of Megadeth. It's not without reason that Cryptic Writings is my favourite Megadeth album.

The thrash doesn't just lack bite. It doesn't even sound like a lesser version of their better days. It sounds like a ghost of any generic thrash band's forgettable, tepid music that is all interchangeable. If it didn't have the Megadeth name and Mustaine's vocals nobody would bother talking about it.
