Not to drag this conversation too far away from metal, but I really would like to respond to these comments because you are most definitely being unfair by condemning jazz as "vacuous". Just because much of it is instrumental doesn't mean it lacks depth any more than a lack of words on a painting would mean it lacks depth. To pick the most prominent example: A lot of the classic jazz of the 50s and 60s was very much about freedom. Listen to some Charles Mingus or Liberation Music Orchestra. This music was the soundtrack to civil rights and to pushing back against the existing power structure, it was music about casting off shackles and demanding respect. It most certainly was not vacuous.

I'm a little over halfway through the new Nachtmystium album and am starting to form my first impressions on it. First impressions are good, I'm not sure if I like it as much as their last two Black Meddle albums, but the things I do like about the band (audible bass, good production, interesting guitar arrangements, etc.) are still here. This is a little more straight forward than their previous two albums and don't feature anywhere near as many blatent psychedelic moments, but they're still there, just more so in the background. The song I posted is probably the closest to their last two albums, which is where I started so that's why I may seem to be stuck on the issue. Basically it's a pretty happy marriage between their more experimental sounds of the Black Meddle albums and their more straight-forward 2006 album Instinct: Decay.

I don't know if "tongue-in-cheek" is the best description of where that tongue is!

Actually I think the lyrics are kinda sweet, like a mini romance novel. They remind me of this other little "love song":

Alice Cooper -- "Feed My Frankenstein"

You're right. I haven't listened to much jazz...or at least not Charles Mingus or Liberation Music Orchestra. They do sound interesting. Maybe I'll mosey over to the Jazz subforum after all when I get tired of screamed vocals here.

I could imagine this being a love or hate album for many on here, the contrast between melodic proggy sections and Meshuggah type jagged riffs and vocals may be something that you like one element or the other but I love contrast in Metal a lot of times and this is quite simply awesome and I diddn't even realise that I will be seeing them next week!

Have a tune:

If you're a bit tired of all the post-rock black metal, but still love black metal with a more experimental edge, try Dodheimsgard. They combine black metal with industrial in a way that is truly odd and a bit disturbing but still straightforward enough to get the head banging.

Srsly backed, great album.

Nice blackened rocker from one of last year's gems.

Giving Agalloch a listen finally. I'm guessing I'm gonna have to give this a few listens before I can really develop an opinion, but it's peaceful and calming so far.

I actually thought that album was one of the best released in 2011
