I'm a huge bm fan, but I don't like Mayhem tbh. Their status as the most anticly black metal band gets my respect though.

This one's been on pretty heavy rotation lately.

Black metal is probably my favourite subgenre of metal, but I agree with Frown, Mayhem really doesn't do all that much for me. Obviously iconic characters, but music wise just not my taste.

This, on the other hand, is essential black metal listening and everyone needs more Agalloch in their life.

Before Mayhem got all experimental they sounded like any other black metal band, just with better production and sicker drums

Hellhammer is a fantastic drummer though. His drumming on this track is amazing.

I'd rank it as one of the best albums in the style for sure.

I'm pretty musically illiterate, so I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm just asking you to justify that. De Mysteriis just sounds like one long blastbeat to me.

have you listened to it? Even so, it's his blast style that is amazing. Very large.

First of all, I forgot the "not" in "not saying you're wrong", and isn't it pretty simple and brainless to just blast for a whole album? Not saying you can't do blast beats all day, but does it really make him a great drummer? I'm assuming there's something about his particular style that sets him apart from all the other blast 'n' grinders.

I am hardly musically literate myself, I just know what I like to hear from drumming.

Yeah, its one beat throughout pretty much here, its just to me more of a feeling thing. As I think defining the genre is all in the feel of it. Not like say Rush where you can hear a solo and go, wow thats mastery... here its more just the feeling.

I do not know how to work it without sounding like some weird hippie on too many drugs lol.

I just like his style, and how the tone of it, while simple and repetitive just hits.

I do not think there is a lot to set him apart from the blast beat crew, but there are just instances within it where it just feels amazing. which could just be more the production.

See also Pete Sandovel here:

the **** did I just say

He gets more drums involved and can manage to do huge fills and blasting at the same time. Even then, I think the blasts are perfect. The quality is really amazing. He's also just ultra fast
