Most of the second disc is good. I especially like Breadfan, So What, Am I Evil, Damage Case and Helpless.

Theres a few erm...."interesting" covers on the first disc but Turn The Page is beautiful.

Their music has certainly suffered over the years. Load was average at best, Reload was disappointing, Garage Inc was un-neccessary and St. Anger was ****. Personally I thought S&M was absolutely beautiful.

Their newer stuff may have won them a few younger fans but if Metallica are still "held on such a high pededstal" I would say its because of their older stuff really.

How would you define the term 'sell out'?

i guess i would say a 'sell out' is any band that their sound is driven by what the mainstream is asking for. i see too many bands that will come out with a great debut album or at least an album with potential and then turn around and their second album sounds like every other nickelback wannabe band. also any band driven by money and profit is a sell out. yes it is a job but that doesn't mean you have to play lame music just so you can be a millionaire. i also think that you can't really be a famous band signed to a big label without technically be a sellout to some degree. it's almost impossible.

metallica will continue to sell anything they put out but they have run their course. to be honest i'd rather listen to the new trivium album, a band definitely influenced by metallica.

To sell out though you have to sell your principles down the river in favour of making money which is why I have never and will never agree with those who claim the whole Napster dispute makes Metallica sell outs. If you want to claim something else they have done makes them sell outs then go for it, you may have a point.

So, we agree then?

jackhammer 01-14-2009 08:04 AM

The second half of Garage, Inc especially the Garage Days tracks had a massive impact on me as a kid and they still get a blast out once in a while. Helpless and The Small Hours especially. I have the classic Diamond Head album 'Lightning To The Nations' which had a massive influence on Metallica.

I thought the Sabbath and Thin Lizzy covers on the 1st disc were pretty good too.

The Unfan 01-15-2009 10:21 AM

All of these covers are less than a third as good as the originals. What an awful 2 discs to have to sit through.

Who's forcing you like?

jenkyfats 01-15-2009 03:48 PM

i got into metal because of the tallica boys. but you can't deny that some of their music sucks weenie. as far as the napster crap, who gives.

scottsy 01-15-2009 08:16 PM

I have to confess to not hearing any of the cover songs discussed here - but I will add that in my observations, cover albums rarely have tracks that sound as good as, or even better than the originals - there's a reason why we savor and favor the original versions - we heard them first, they became precious to us, and they are locked into our memories, along with significant ocassions, memories and the like...

So when someone comes along and changes it all - we naturally don't feel as if it is as good...

i didn't want to read all the pages but i read the first 3.

it really wasn't neccessary. anyone who puts zach delarocha up as an example for anything other than a pretender has little/no knowledge of what they speak.

Roygbiv 06-01-2009 07:11 AM

why is this thread relevant again?

People obviously still hate metallica.

TheBig3 06-01-2009 08:22 AM

And for equally logical reasons.

Wayfarer 06-03-2009 02:10 PM

Well, yeah, but only because of what they were doing over two decades ago. It's hard to just...lose one's "legendary" status, no matter how many crap albums you put out afterwards - no matter how many times you reinforce the notion that you're only still in it for the money. I think for Metallica to no longer be considered "legends" they'd have to be caught like...raping children or something.

To some, that sort of thing is relative from person to person.

Even that would be the best thing they've done in years.

Thats the meanest thing you have to say about metallica? I could think if some stuff way more 'not so nice' than that.

Stone Birds 06-03-2009 03:19 PM

i didn't say "mean" i said "Not So Nice"
and that was the most simple truthful explination

"You've pulled the trigger on my love gun" is one of the most epic lyrics in the history of music. I don't care what anybody says.

Which by the way is made even more epic because of the note he hits...

You pulled the trigger of myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy love guuuuuuun, a-love gaaaaaaaaaaaaan, lo-uh-uhve guuuu-uhnnnnn.

Fully agree with Wayfarer! Let people talk everything they want about this but we love "You've pulled the trigger on my love gun" and dote!

jacklovezhimself 06-04-2009 02:52 PM

dude this is awesome.
you would think that "metal gods" would respect a corporation that doesn't hand everything to "the man", but instead they're trying to fight them.

It's not the fact that they became to successful, it's the fact that they aren't the same band with the same kill em' all attitude that they were when they made it. They used the hardcore metalhead audience to get recognized, then turned their back on them for a more mainstream audience and more money. They also threw a hissy fit because people were downloading their music from Napster. If you were a 12 year old computer nerd like me when napster first hit it big, you were downloading music among the first generation of online file sharing and using it as a means to discover new music. I discovered Metallica that way, and was a huge fan. When they sued napster I was absolutely embarrassed to call myself a fan, I still am. This band is a disgrace as human induviduals, four d-bags that are somehow able to combine their douchebagery and become something more than any one douche could eveer accomplish alone. That's why I hate Metallica.

Sorry, dude. I gotta say that KISS are clown shoes.

However, I agree with you on Kill 'Em All, and not only for the fact that you used the term "bee's knees".

I can't hate Metallica. I used to love them. Master of Puppets is still the shit. Sure, they got lame after ...And Justice For All, but that's what happens when you team up with Bob Rock. You make a hit record that's palatable to the masses. Doesn't matter how much I think it sucks. It's not gonna change Metallica's minds.

But check this out
