yes, Racer X was quite nice, I saw Paul Gilbert in 2010 on stage in Paris, he played some tracks off his Racer X albums, great performance.

Its been a surprise that I haven't mentioned this guitar shredder on this thread yet. Not classified as a power metal album, but this neo-classical groundbreaking masterpiece by Yngwie Malmsteen, must have had every budding future power metal guitarist listening to it back in the early 1980s when it came out. Lets be honest, its an amazing piece of guitar shredding with some good supporting instrumentals by his backing band and the usual gruff reliable vocals of Jeff Scott Soto on board as well, who oddly went on the feature with Journey for a while in the 00's.

Now its time to properly update this thread, I've covered bands and albums from the early 1980s to 1997. Now I'll push forward and cover albums 1998 t0 2000 and of course still include some earlier stuff I've overlooked or just discovered.

i was one of them, to the extent of buying expensive tutorials on neo-classical guitar

i've pretty much abandoned that style, but i pull off a Bach-inspired lick every now and then

As said, I'll be looking at albums primarily from 1998 to 2000. This is the third offering on here from Blind Guardian, without doubt one of the most pivotal and most important bands in the history of power metal. Their previous album Imaginations From the Other Side is a landmark album, the follow-up to that album a concept album based on Tolkien's Silmarillion is equally held in such high-esteem, Imaginations From the Other Side was full of complex instrumentals combined with bassist Hansi Kursch's gruff voice, well Nightfall on Middle Earth looks to take the whole thing in an even more complex direction with its operatic overtones, reminding the listener of Queen at times, the faster songs sit well with the slower often folky style numbers and the whole thing is pieced together with spoken voice sections between the songs. Nightfall in Middle Earth is without a doubt, an album for the power metal aficionado and not for the casual listener or beginner. Like most of Blind Guardian's discography takes several listens to really appreciate the quality and complexity of their work. Also that Morgoth cover kicks butt too!
