I think Layne was an above average vocalist and Vedder is in the same league. I like your analogy of scott stapp and Weiland, i think they both tried to emulate what was popular instead of creating their own style. I think Chris Cornell has the best voice of any grunge artist, hes almost operatic at times and he can really wail.

When singers rip off other vocalists, its a sure sign of their admiration for them and their abilities (sure some do it for commercial reasons as well) So I think that says volumes about Eddie Vedder. Scott Weiland is not a great example, as he's a great vocalist in his own right, but I do see your point here in that the STP cashed in to a degree on Pearl Jam and were easily the best band to do so.

I'm not actually saying Layne Staley is bad vocalist or anything, but rather the whole hype surrounding AIC is really so far fetched, for what was a plodding sound with a few melodies thrown in.

I do find that Weiland and Vedder have comparable "yeah" ratios

I always found that AiC has more of a metal influence in their music than other grunge bands of the era, save for maybe the Melvins. Maybe that's why you think that.

"Best" is kind of a stupid question because it's too subjective so I voted for Alice In Chains because they're my favourite.

He can definitely sing, and his dual leads with Cantrell are some of my favorite vocals of all time. But he likes to do "voices", like the deep voice that he does on "Them Bones" as just one example, that just really sound goofy. They just make Alice In Chains sound dumb at times.

Scott Weiland's Christmas album says otherwise.
