Nine Inch Nails Drop Out Of MTV Movie Awards Over Bush Dispute
05.27.2005 2:59 PM EDT

Band will not perform at awards show because of a disagreement over political content.

Nine Inch Nails have dropped out of the 2005 MTV Movie Awards following a dispute over their plan to incorporate an image of George W. Bush into their performance of the song "The Hand That Feeds."

The announcement was made Thursday via a statement posted by Nails frontman Trent Reznor on NIN.com.

"Nine Inch Nails will not be performing at the MTV Movie Awards as previously announced. We were set to perform 'The Hand That Feeds' with an unmolested, straightforward image of George W. Bush as the backdrop," Reznor wrote. "Apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me. See you on tour this fall when we return to play in America."

In a statement issued Friday (May 27), MTV expressed disappointment in Nine Inch Nails' decision.

"While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards."

Nine Inch Nails' label, Interscope Records, had no comment on the matter.

NIN had been scheduled to play the Movie Awards on June 9 along with Eminem and Mariah Carey. At press time, several acts were being touted to take their slot on the show, though none could be confirmed.

The 2005 MTV Movie Awards air Thursday, June 9 at 8:30 p.m., with MTV News' pre-show kicking off the evening at 8 p.m.

Everybody is a social commentator these days.

Who the hell cares what Trent Reznor thinks of the US government.

In the words of Frank Zappa 'Shut up & play your guitar'

Yet frank fought the PMRC so I guess he didn't mean that to the fullest extent.

Artists have always been the harbingers of change, and frankly Im glad that he pulled out because MTV is a abhorent abomination to the progression of music.

Thats a damn good point, Not that its a good reason, but im pretty sure its because a larger portion of the country watches the award shows. Pundits comment on actions of a show, and if they play a video, its all but artist sanctioned, but the award show seems to make MTV and advocate of their actions.

Sounds pointless. I like Reznor and I like NIN (no comment on the new album) but his political commentary is unnecessary {I'm sure they aren't the only acts among the heavly-liberal Hollywood guests that will try and take a cheap shot}. Instead of taking advantage of the venue for a fashionable anti-GWB statement, wouldn't it be more rational to simply promote their new single?

Heavily Liberal, well someone works for Fox. Have you ever thought that people make a political commentary because they believe it and not because they want to be fashionable.

Sorry kid, but its far to easy to dismiss the song and an "unmolested photograph" as commercially driven, but we aren't all coroparte whores.

Haha I probably did come off as a conservative to someone like yourself, but the fact is not all PC e-politics is simply right or left. Continue to draw a f*cking line and throw people on either side. If you're denying that Hollywood is liberal, then you're simply a moron. I'm not a fan of GWB, never said I was.
While we're sitting here assuming things, kid (i can't believe i'm called a kid by someone younger than me), I do think this is "commercially driven" and the fact that Reznor would even think of performing at the MTV movie awards to begin with suggests he is indeed a corporate whore. Boo hoo, MTV being deuche bags, what a f*cking surprise. Either you play at a big venue or you don't. By their actions, it suggest to me that they merely agreed to the gig just to use that specific stage prop. Now that is sad, kid.
I'm not taking anything away from NIN or Reznor. It should be apparent that I am a fan of their work, but I reiterate, I think the political commentary is unnecessary, and they did not have to chose to back out of the gig merely because MTV was unsurprisingly being d*cks.

When I want to see bands play, I pay for the music. Not for their political beliefs.

Nine Inch Nails is one of the last things I would think of to go to for politics.
