True ...and justice for all sold relatively well, and the track "One" won a Grammy.
So I guess I must push back the clock more or less to the first three albums.

Master of Puppets went platinum in the U.S. before And Justice For All was even released.

Even if I underestimated the number of fans they had in the 80's surely there are a lot of people who falsely claim that they were at their concerts back in the old days, when the band was still “hardcore” and known by only the selected few.
But hey ,mine is just a theory..I never said that I was 100% certain!
I'm not sure if you're making this 9 million up but the Woodstock comparison with Metallica is not a good one really. The selected few would only really apply to the first two albums and even then Metallica were hardly an unknown band.

If anything you need to go back to the first two albums, as Master of Puppets put them on the map and when that came out they were one of the bigger metal acts.

Must have something to do with Metallica being pioneers and everyone realizes it. So, what do you do to pioneers, you glorify them.

Oh, and also their first three studio albums are THE BEES KNEES

Fuck no. The Black Album was dull dull dull. It had some cool songs, but a lot of them were just boring. The only song off there that I still give even a slight fuck about is "The Unforgiven".

"Through the Never" is pretty good too, but yeah that album definitely isn't one of their crowning achievements.
