I think this is a pointless question. Rock and metal are two genres that have so much diversity that it's impossible to answer. Is the difference between garage rock and death metal the same difference as the difference between prog rock and doom metal? What about the difference between garage rock and prog rock for that matter? Death metal and doom metal?

We're talking in general. Various genres of metal shares elements which aren't common in traditional rock genres (roots rock, garage rock, rock and roll, or just anything called classic rock). I'd say most metal bands tend to play faster and louder than a lot of bands in those genres.

Is that really useful? Is it interesting to say that they just play faster? If that's the closest you can get to a real difference then this seems like a rather dull subject.
