Default The Death Metal thread (version 2)

I did the first one and though I like it, I feel like I wanna start over again and do a new one.

The original can be seen here: http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-meta...al-thread.html

I will probably end up doing some bands over from the first one, but I wanna start this one to get a new discussion going instead of resurrecting the old one.

-------

I have not listened to as much of the style as I did when I was doing the first one, but a few albums from last year I have checked out has sparked my interest again.

Gorguts, Ulcerate and Obliteration put out some great albums last year. The last one there has got me back into the mood for this.

I will leave this one open to anyone as well who wants to share a band, and album, and give us some insight into things.

So everyone feel free to add whatever, do a spotlight on a band you think people should know, be it an old established one, or a newer band who deserves some attention.

Band I mentioned above. I had no real knowledge on them before. I was reading through a list of someones favorite Death Metal albums from 2013, and they ranked this album above both "Vermis" and "Colored Sands", so I of course had to give it a listen to see if their hype was justified.

I wound up liking this album a lot actually, has an old school sound with some more modern production values, which gives it an interesting feel. Has some Doom influences to it, can hear some influence from Autopsy here and there.

Generally speaking Death Metal doesn't do a lot for me. But due to the current Metal War (!!!!!!!!!!!), it's all I've been listening to for days. I think the two albums currently at war have reprogrammed my brain a little bit. The genre has clearly moved beyond the gross-out contest that it used to be, so I'm interested.

Yeah, there are many types of Death Metal, some just go for the gross out and riffs, others have made more of an art form out of it. Like any style of music though, you have to look through a lot of shit to get to the good stuff.

Glad to hear those 2 albums are changing your mind though. I will keep that type of sound more in mind for future wars.

As someone who is insanely in love with Melodic Death Metal I find it kinda sad, that Death Metal sounds so **** in my ears. Does anyone maybe know any Death Metal that is not just a blurry unmelodious noise with some piggy grunting in the background or is that what the genre is all about? Because if it is, I have a genre for you, called Noise which actually sounds pretty similar...

(oh yeah, I like the band "Death". That's the sad thing..Because there's nothing else in this genre I have found but this single band)

edit: ya, i've listened to the video you posted in this thread now and it's kinda the perfect example of what weirds me out with most of the death metal bands there are (except this is really slow, which makes it even more annoying)...****ty chords, lyrics that a child could come up with and so DAMNED untrained singing...come on..even tho it's grunting, you can't just drink a bottle of vodka, shout into the mic and think you're a superstar...

i'm srsly sorry about the words i'm using :P might come off harsher than i mean it, but it's just so ****ing sad, because this genre would really have a spark of good in there.. only ALL the bands i've heard suck monkey ass, except Death.

What bands have you heard from the Death Metal scene? I think to actually see some of the stuff that leads you to the conclusion that the style if just noise to you can be addressed better by knowing what you know of it as a whole.

For me, when I first got into the style, I was limited to bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Carcass and Entombed. Basically the bands that I heard on shows like Power 30 and Power Hour here. Which introduced me to many Metal bands when I was about 13.

Knowing only those small handful of bands, and not as much as I know now, I too felt like it would be a style I was destined to like for a period and move onto something else. Not knowing really until the days of the internet I would start investigating it further.

I think is is also a style that you may get some "music snobs" calling talentless wank, thinking it is just a gimmick... growing up I experienced most of the people I know just being like "oh, you like that?".

I could recommend a couple thousand bands, but that would be quite a cumbersome post.

I do not know about the untrained singing part. Death Metal vocals may not be something people can get behind, but the singing is not always something that simple. It takes a great deal of technique and power to do. It is not just something someone can wake up and do. I mean, it is not Opera, but it is not simple either.

Lyrically, it can be about a lot of topics. Be it gore, satanic, political or cultural (think Nile, and their Egyptian inspired lyrics) or death with other subject matter that can be philosophical at times.

Oh yeah I forgot about Cannibal Corpse.
They are kinda ok, and two or three songs are actually pretty good.

The bands I've heard so far are Death, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Napalm Death, Nihilist, Grave, and some stuff I can't name, because I only heard it at a friends place, who is really in love with the genre.

Yeah, I'm a musician since i was a child, as is my father, who raised me with classic, rock'n'roll and folk and I've played the piano for 12 years now. I usually always find something in every genre, but i have such a hard time trying to get into this style of music.

Have to listen to the stuff Mundo has posted now. Maybe there's something good in there
