Chino Moreno is a top ten vocalist for me. I think he's pretty awesome.
Deftones would be the only band I can stomach from the list. Chino is great on record but he really falls short live. I wish they would cut down on the filters and vox systems they use for his voice live, he and the band would be much better for it.

You know. I've only saw Deftones live once, back on their Diamond Eyes album tour. I honestly thought Chino sounded pretty good. I prefer his voice live over what I hear on their albums, to be honest. It has a rawness to it. You saw the band live or YouTube video? Because a video uploaded to YouTube really kills sound quality and doesn't do well to give people an idea of what a singer in a band sounds like in a live setting. I'd say go catch Deftones live if you haven't yet. Killer live show...

I've also saw Chino with one of his many side projects. I saw him with his project Crosses with the guitarist from Far. Pretty killer show as well. His vocals were spot on.

I've seen them live three times. Each time I kept hoping their sound guy would get the mix right but was disappointed in ways. I wouldn't call it horrible, but the vocals were very subdued and there were problems with feedback at every single show. I'm sure they have their good days, unfortunately I wasn't there to see it. I love the Deftones in general though, definitely a unique sound that screams deftones upon first listen.

I'd certainly fault the people that oversee their sound. Because I honestly think Chino is more than a capable singer. He has range, dynamic to his voice, he's just versatile in general. And no SOB better say Deftones are some run of the mill nu-metal band from back in the day either. They were never nu-metal. Deftones have and will always be, simply Deftones with their own sound. There's only one band right now that I think has in some ways succeeded in taking influence from Deftones and kind of pulling a sound of their own from it, and that is Islander. Neat band. Not saying they're extremely impressive. But simply that I think they have some great potential to grow in to a great band. Check out Coconut Dracula from them if you care to. I'd recommend my favorite song from them called New Wave if you could find it on YouTube. But it's not up yet.

Ive noticed this too and with other bands as well like SOAD, they just can't recreate the same quality vocals live.

and im not really sure why, cause sometimes it's not just the vocals, it's the guitars too and just the overall quality in the sound that drops significantly..

but on the other hand other live shows from the same band can sound better than their studio production. so im not really sure who to blame for this, is it that the artist relied solely on studio tricks or is it that the sound wasn't equalized properly on their live show?

I gotta second Deftones being an inferior live show, fantastic on album but leaves much to be desired in person.

Also RIP Chi... have they continued making music since his death?

There are many bands that have that problem. When I saw System of a Down they sounded great. I found no fault with their live show. I saw them on The Family Values tour and I think due to the short set of songs, maybe I was somewhat influenced by just being happy to hear them.
