SOAD's first album is great. Haven't willingly listened to any others, but I know all the hits from them and don't really desire to.

Of course. Ninetales is the Tampon Pokemon after all.

I'm guessing the song was "Prison Song".

I know they are a widely popular band and I enjoy a lot of their stuff but I always considered them to be an original act similar to mindless self indulgence. (At least in their earlier years.)

I think you're underestimating SOAD's popularity in the mid-2000s by a good deal. If you add all of their FB likes together, they're about equal to SOAD's like count. I think A7X is on about the same level, but SOAD hasn't even released an album in almost 10 years. I imagine that if they were still an active band that they'd have an even larger following.

I always classify SOAD as alternative rather than metal. I always liked them a lot more than their popular "nu metal" peers.

haha i had a rapper friend once who got freaked out by the song 'Twist' by Korn.

he said the singer was possessed by the devil.

Probably and I'm also not sure how old LeHetfield is. I started getting into underground hiphop during that time so I don't have the best idea of what the metal scene was like. All the people I hung with were already listening to SOAD before Toxicity or didn't like them at all so I guess I just never noticed the boost in popularity.. *derp*

Also I'll add that many of them no longer like SOAD, but it was a gateway for them nonetheless.

Sounds like those people came to their senses. I was 21 when their first album came out and I remember a girl I was seeing at the time telling me how great they were. I also remember checking them out and being surprised how much they sucked. If you and your friends got into them a decade after the fact, I'm not sure what I'm supposed make of that but it doesn't change my perception of them not being a very good band.

I'm confused by this statement. If you add whose FB likes they're equal to SOAD's? You've only mentioned one band. Or am I missing something? Something about that statement seems incomplete...

That may be true. He commented it wasn't his cup of tea, but he kept it going to ride it out.
Suffocation could be jumping the gun. If I come in contact with him again, I'll play at least one song I consider real metal and see how he reacts. Whether it's good or bad I'm posting that reaction here..

Thanks for all the enthusiasm people, it's keeping the community alive. 17 posts in one day not bad..

I got into metal through Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, not SOAD or Avenged Sevenfold. *grins smugly and feels superior*
