Well, their first three albums are totally grunge despite leaning a little closer to alternative rock, and they are one of the "Big Four of Grunge." Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden.

I wasn't aware Purple was in. OK.

EDIT: Also, is Hot Rats anywhere on this list? Never heard it, but I'm surprised its not on Jazz Rock

It's on the jazz fusion list. Also it's probably a good idea to only suggest albums that you've heard.

How are they "totally grunge"? Clearly we have two entirely different definitions.

Pearl Jam is proto-post-grunge, which technically evens out to just grunge.

They had the same kind of definitive teenage angst that grunge is known for. They steered closer to alternative rock to stay more mainstream. But they were a huge part of the grunge scene. They don't do grunge anymore since alternative is far more dominent. Youbcan't tell me songs like Once and Even Flow and Why Go don't have that sound.

I'd say they steered closer to classic rock than grunge. Dudes were some 70's hard rock fanboys.

Im surprised you left out Stone Temple pilots outta the big 4, though not all their songs sound grunge to me they sound more grunge than Pearl Jam.

Emo doesn't have the "same angst." But I agree they sound a little similar. Also, grunge was known for its punk influence. Post-grunge is a liitle more conventional and focuses on pop hooks. I can put Soundgarden and Pearl Jam on the same pedastal. Plus, post-grunge focises a little less on angst. I can't put Pearl Jam's Ten and Foo Fighter's The Colour and Shape on the same pedastal, despite being both alternative rock. But I can group Nevermind with Ten.

I didn't leave them out. Google it. That's the official big four.

I did and you're right but i kinda meant out of your personal Big 4. official or not i would replace Pearl jam with STP in my big 4 list. they were as popular as Pearl jam and during that whole era they seemed as relevant as them to the whole grunge movement.
