Best 90's rock band?

I have to agree that they were an 80's band. Appetite is their highest selling album, as well as the highest selling debut album in the world. Sweet Child of Mine is considered to be one of the all-time greatest rock songs ever, same list as other amazing hits like Teen Spirit or Stairway to Heaven. Plus, it's often agreed on that their best album was Appetite. As for their 90's works, they were often iffy. UYI2 might be a hit album, but it never came close to the acclaim of Appetite.

They were both great at the turn of the 90s, and such comparisons are ridiculous to me, especially if I am talking to people who know their music art from the beginning to the end. Do you rellay think their "Welcome to the Jugngle" is any better than any other later released song or single such as the last one "November Rain"? Do you really think they had not been that great if it was not for the "Appetite". Do you think "Use you Illusion" would not make them as much great in rock music?

If it wasn't for AFD then they never would have the chance to make any of the other albums. It was AFD that put them on the map as more than just your average hair metal band, and is one of the most well known releases from the hair metal era, so basically yes to everything you asked.

In saying that, I don't even really like GNR so who cares.

I'm actually surprised how well they've stood the test of time, so far. I was very dismissive of them at the time.

I'm gonna go with STP. I'd put on an STP album before any of the other choices. Their luscious guitar tones and arrangements were extremely appealing to me back then. I still put on Purple every now and then.

Seeing as how Appetite is their highest selling album and has at least 5 hit songs, Welcome to the Jungle, Nightrain, Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City, and Sweet Child O' Mine, and It's So Easy, totalling to half the album, five of those being singles... Yeah. I think they were great on their first album.

Even though Stone Temple Pilots were from San Diego I thought they encapsulated the Grunge sound. I really like Dean DeLeo as a guitar player. I thought he came up with some cool riffs and he borrowed from all over the place. He even throw in a few riffs that reminds me of George Harrison playing a guitar through a Leslie e.g. Creep and Lady Picture Show. Dean's solo in LPS reminds me a little of Steve Howe playing albeit at a slower tempo. I kinda thought that Dean would strum chords like Curt Cobain - stuff like that. There are a few bands I like I don't know if I can come up with one. STP is near the top.

Lady Picture Show is heavily borrowing from the Beatles song structures, especially the chorus, but I can see what you mean. Dean is a less-is-more kind of guitar player and utilizes that approach with style and poise. His textured chords were a great backdrop for Scott. Too bad he soured it all with the drug crap, but then again, that's r&r.

Yeah, but still, according to the 90s list I gave you an example to, I still think they are widely considered to be a 90s group: "November Rain, Don't Dry, You Could be Mine, Knockin' on Heaven's Door (cover), Yesterdays, Civil War, Estranged, The Garden", and other high quality tracks total half of ther album, too. Yeah, in the 90s, according to that list.
