Yeah, cause if there is any particular genre that is the closest to Devin Townsend's songwriting style, it's alternative rock.

As for his influences, he is an amalgamation of:

Judas Priest
Janes Addiction
Motorhead
Kings X
Enya
Ween
Fear Factory
Meshuggah
Cardiacs
Rapoon
Paul Horn
Ravi Shankar
Cowboy Junkies
Steve Vai (it's inevitable, even if he's not a shredder)
Cop Shoot Cop
Grotus
The Young Gods
Godflesh

Say what you want about Townsend, but there's a LOT of variety in what's he's recorded since the late 90's. There aren't that many people (if any) in the metalsphare who've done straight up New Age, experimental electronic, cheesy 80's AOR metal AND Pink Floyd inspired West Coast rock all in a mere decade. And done it all well on top of that. Not to mention his forays with Fear Factory and SYL. He's all over the map, but that's part of the appeal.

Given how many anti-SJW rants you've laid down on this board, I figured that you'd be against watered-down diversity but if you think that's a selling point, I won't argue against it.

Watered down? He's doing more things on these three projects than most bands do in an entire career. I wouldn't be surprised if he jumped straight into jazz or psychedelia on his next set of projects.

Yeah but he doesn't like it so it's watered down

Yes, yes, because having a wide variety of influences automatically means that you are executing them in a genuine manner.

I mean at this point, Dev might as well be in a tribute band. He might even learn the charm in playing interesting music if he picks a good group.
