I would if I could stand Crowbar's singer. I really wish I could because there aren't enough god-tier sludge bands that aren't post-metal but that guy does nothing for me.

Yeah, Melvins have dabbled in and influenced metal. Doesn't make them a metal band. Just makes them a band who have played what turned out to be metal.

Yeah, it can be difficult to find some real sludge metal bands with how little of it can be found with how popular post-metal is. Have you heard of Floor? windsock hooked me onto them:
Lord by Fire is another good one:
and while known as a grunge band, Tad has a lot of stuff I'd call sludge:
