"Jim Morrison -- I'm drunk, I'm nobody. I'm drunk, I'm famous. I'm drunk, I'm dead."

Kinda harsh, but not too far off-target IMHO
Personally I find his lyrics the best around, quite simply because I remember so many great lines from Doors songs more so than any other artsist that I've listened to over the years.

of coz Jim's nothing like his heroes - William Blake or Lord Byron

but there's at least interesting wordplay and clumsiness you don't find anywhere else

Laughs. No one is like Lord Byron. Who can tell if Jim Morrison hadn't discovered drugs and booze, where he'd have gone, or what heights the Doors could have attained. He could be 'out there' quite a bit. Some songs are very good. Some you wonder where his mind is.

The doors are a perfect case of " the sum of the parts" kinda thing....apart from each other , probably none would have done anything remarkable ....but together? One of the most unique, and in my opinion timeless, rock bands ever. And to talk about densmore for a second, what amazed me most about his drumming was his ability to read Jim's mind when he would improvise vocally...the way he put punctuation to Jim's words was uncanny to me....he seemed to know what Jim was gonna do...when I'm pretty sure even Jim didn't know what Jim was gonna do....

I think that the doors is the most inappropriate band to say this for, because for everybody "Jim was the doors".

Rnr clown...He was , to me, the greatest frontman ever........and he would have been a great vocalist and songwriter without those 3 guys...buuuut....I've often tried to picture him fronting another band ....like say big brother and the holding co. Or something ....you know , switch places with Janis ....lol ...it would have been cool but not what the doors had ...no?

Of course that if John, Ray and Robby weren't there, it wouldn't be the doors (having in mind that Robby had written as much songs as Jim), but Jim with his attitude would be great in any other band and that band would be as famous as the doors were. There are soo many other bands that are a much better example for this "the sum of the parts" type. Take Led Zeppelin for example.

I completely disagree that Jim WAS the Doors. Robby wrote some of their biggest hits. The band was amazing, some of the material without Jim was pretty good. Ray wasn't bad at singing, either. Sure, they wouldn't have reached such levels of fame without Jim, but they were still great musicians.
