:) ROCK ON !

jackhammer 09-16-2007 11:41 AM

Hendrix's by far. It's probably the best cover version ever.

sleepy jack 09-16-2007 02:53 PM

Bob Dylan's because I can't stand Hendrix.

The Dave 09-16-2007 04:53 PM

The Dave Matthews Band cover is really ****ing good, the first version of it that I ever heard and I still like it more than Hendrix's and the original.

You need educating! Seriously a lot of artists that you like owe a debt to Hendrix, however circuitious the route. You can't say you hate him. You don't like him, fair enough; but the guy was so far ahead of his time and pwns so much music even now.

sleepy jack 09-16-2007 05:37 PM

It's not that I hate him, I just can't get into his music.

jackhammer 09-16-2007 05:47 PM

Do you have any albums by him? Are you judging him solely on his most recognised tracks? His songwriting, his recording techniques were just as revolutionary as The Beatles and The Beach Boys.

Son of JayJamJah 09-16-2007 05:51 PM

It amazes me that anyone who listens to such a wide variety of music as Crowquill would not enjoy the hell out of Hendrix, but there you have it. I would hold it against you but it is mind bottling...

Sparky 09-16-2007 05:53 PM

little wing is my fave <3

thats what got me into him, not all along the watchtower.

I heard Electric Ladyland and didn't care for it.

jackhammer 09-16-2007 06:04 PM

Try this:

He pretty much only ever used distorted guitar in his work, but his studio based music is revolutionary.

sleepy jack 09-16-2007 06:09 PM

Alright, i'll listen to it and get back to you.

Frances 09-16-2007 06:44 PM

Hendrix For sure, and I agree, maybe the best cover around.

swim 09-16-2007 06:48 PM

old bobby boy.

huggybear27 09-17-2007 12:33 AM

there's also another one that's gooooood !!
Richie Havens performed "all along the watchtower" on stage !!

Son of JayJamJah 09-17-2007 09:58 AM

YouTube - ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER

huggybear27 09-17-2007 10:29 AM

hehey !! not bad !

ZOSO 09-24-2007 04:52 PM

Dave Matthews Band, although I think all of them are very good, I just think Dave's version live is the coolest.

Wayfarer 09-25-2007 04:43 PM

Hendrix's by far, though Dylan's was great too (of course).

Old_Tyme_yungn 11-21-2007 11:35 PM

As much as i love dylan, it's gotta be Hendrix's version. Just because he could tak any song and make it into an epic. Wild thing, like a rolling stone, hound dog, sunshine of your love, born under a bad sign, hoochie coochie man, and he even does national anthems better than they wre ever intended to be. man had talent....

Maddest_Hatter 11-23-2007 09:22 PM

I like George Lynch's version off his 2004 Furious George album.

Try Jimi Hndrix - Blues (1994)

Wayfarer 11-23-2007 11:02 PM

Try LSD and Electric Ladyland again.

Old_Tyme_yungn 11-24-2007 04:56 PM

electric ladyland and blues are the best two hendrix albums man! a close third is band of gypsies.

Yea the Blues album is basically a 30 minute long solo.

Dessalines 07-12-2011 08:56 AM

When I play this song, I am bored to death and I don't mean play it on a stereo. It is really a very boring riff.

William Zanzinger 07-12-2011 04:11 PM

Dylan`s version has a bleakness and sounds genuinely enigmatic while Jimi`s version (for all the musical brilliance) doesn`t.

Nosferatu Man 07-12-2011 05:13 PM

I have a pretty sweet version of All Along.... on a Dylan & The Dead live album it is a truly brilliant version.

Dr_Rez 07-12-2011 06:41 PM

Dess great bump, 4 year old thread, with piss poor OP.

Automaticchaos 07-12-2011 06:44 PM

I know Eddie Vedder did a cover for the bob dylan biopic soundtrack with some other band. I can't remember what the band was though. I really enjoyed that version

artemis 07-12-2011 06:47 PM

I like both.. maybe Jimmy's slightly better...

evi1gun 07-13-2011 01:07 PM

I first heard A.A.T.W back in the '80's when U2 covered it on 'Rattle and Hum'.

But I prefer Hendrix. All three "Jimi Hendrix Experience" albums are excellent. Voodoo Chile (slight return) is one of my all time fave's. Watch the following vid. It's Hendrix on the Lulu show in '69. On the very day that Cream split up.

Jedey 07-13-2011 04:25 PM

Dave Mason did a good version on Certified Live.

Local legend has it that the witch hat water tower in Minneapolis was Bob Dylan's inspiration for All Along The Watchtower.

I got the picture off the internet, the tower is in Prospect Park in Minneapolis, it's in between The University of Minnesota where Bob spent a short time near the border of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

JMayerPhoto 07-23-2011 10:11 AM

Eric and Jimi are too good how am i suppose to choose?!?!?

Moodiesfanalways 07-23-2011 09:57 PM

A version that comes across well is the version by Dave Mason off his 1974 self titled lp. A couple years later he does a live version of it off his Certified Live 1976 2 lp set. Both were released by Columbia Records.

A version that is very obscure but is an in demand piece, especially from some of the foreign vinyl collectors is the one by Barbara Keith. She is obscure as you get but a talent. I'm not sure if there is a youtube on this (probably not) but a good version of it nonetheless.

Colby4780 07-28-2011 12:14 PM

I am going to say Hendrix, I love Bob Dylan, but Jimi's cover is the best.

The majority of the time an artist/band is judged solely on their recognizes tracks. Hell. Sometimes even a whole genera can be.
Anyways. If we're talking about which artist we prefer the song by. My personal preference is Jimi. If we're talking about which album he performs the best, I really like electric ladyland's version, but the original is just as well done.
:hphones:

blastingas10 08-08-2011 09:24 PM

Dylans version with The Grateful Dead is probably the best. I've never heard Jerry shred like he does in that song
