The Velvet Underground have obviously inspired many great bands and musicians, take for example Brian Eno or Jesus and the Mary Chain. I still don't believe they have inspired half as many musicians as The Beatles did.

Sorry, VU is awesome - but when it comes to influence, they're no match for the Beatles.

The question is "who is most influential?" .. not "who do you like the most?"

^ Name ten bands that have named The Beatles to be a direct influence.

I don't go around remembering all bands that are not just influenced by the Beatles, but actually also say so to the media, so I had to do a search. Here are some of the more known bands / artists that came up.
  • Oasis
  • Panic at the Disco
  • Ozzy Osbourne (black sabbath)
  • Richard Ashcroft (from the Verve)
  • Dave Matthews (from Dave Matthews Band)
  • Billy Joel
  • Tommy James and the Shondells
  • Jonas Brothers
  • Stone Sour
  • Cheap Trick
  • Andy Burrows (from Razorlight)
  • Roger McGuinn (from The Byrds)
  • The Ghetto Brothers

Note this is more than you asked for .. I also found many more, but not as big names. I'm sure more biggies would have come up if I'd spent a little more time, though.

Listing the bands influenced by the Beatles would obviously be a practically impossible.

"You can't be greater than Elvis, change things as much as the Beatles, or be as original as Led Zeppelin. All you can do is rip them off" ~ Billy Corgan

Wow, you're rather ingenuous. You could win an award for that or something.

For the record, the Beatles directly influenced more artists than any other band. That isn't to say that they were the most inventive, but their effect upon music in general is unparalleled.

Elliot Smith, Ween, and ELO also directly said they were influenced by the Beatles.

All those suck though except my man Billy Joel, and I voted based off of influence on good music.

Well, that's a bit pretentious, but alright. Ironically, according to the music feed in your signature, as I write this - you've recently listened to a number of Elliot Smith songs.

Face it, if you love them or hate them - the chances that none of the music you like to listen to is influenced by the Beatles is slim .. unless your taste in music is incredibly narrow.

I'm not a Beatles fanboy, just being realistic.
