Neil never looked as cool as this when he was young, though:-

I saw them both live last year and I admit, Neil rocked a little harder but I still prefer bob. Bob actually has progressed more as a musician. I couldn't believe how good he could play the organ and harmonica, you can't really hear that on any of his records. He's gotten much better without a doubt. He even did some Lead electric guitar. It wasn't much on technical terms but neither is Neil. As with Neil, nothing really showed me that he has gotten any better on piano or guitar.

Those are very fair observations. For myself though, when I listen to Neil Young it's all about the intensity that he projects through his music. If anything it's his lack of technical ability and the fact that its never really improved that makes him timeless.

I got a woody when Neil went into the solo of "keep on rockin in the free world". He started wammying the **** out of his tremolo bar. I had to tuck my chub so I wasn't poking the person in front of me.

Sure Country, Folk, and Blues got warped, but I think it still was the most fundamental ingredient to Psychedelic Rock. But I will agree that eventually those genres became so synthesized and distorted that it became an entirely distinct sound. Oops i'm late.

How experimental has Dylan gotten? The whole entirely-guitar-and-distortion album was not necessarily the most original idea but it was pretty left field for many musicians, and he pulled it off pretty well on Le Noise, and I think he did it on another album as well.

"Arc", a bonus disc with the "Weld" double live albums

i think Dylan's fanbase doesn't take kindly to him experimenting, most of his attempts have been laughed at, on stage

Are you nodding at the plugging in phase? If you are I'm smirking.

nah, he experimented with reggae, soul, electronica

most attempts got him booed on stage, so he never replicated them on his records

That's unfortunate, i didn't realize Dylan fans were such conservative pricks (though it's not surprising). The first two genres seem pretty reasonable, though Electronica doesn't really seem like it'd suit him.

I don't know if Young's experiments are entirely welcome by his traditional fans, but I think he's to self-confident and fuck-youish to really care anyway.
