Comus

Lets be fair, most people who claim to have a favourite band know very little about them. I heard a passing conversation about someone who's favourite group was Led Zeppelin, it went somewhat like this:

"I like totally love led zeppelin, stairway to heaven is soooo coool, I wonder when they're going to release the next album, I know it's only been a few weeks since their last one, but it was really cool and fresh and new."

While I admire their love for decent music, they somewhat dropped the ball in identifying what time period LZ came from.

I know people who call themselves prog rock fans who have never heard of King Crimson, and people who "love" Folk who have never heard Bob Dylan, but everyone knows the beatles, and that recognition I feel is very undeserving.

You know, Comus, I do agree with that.

I will be the first person to admit that I am a music snob. I have studied music since the day I was born, both theory and history. I went to University for music, I make a living working in the music industry, and nothing urks me more than people who jump on this "fad" train.

Which is a reason why (relating back to the purpose of this thread), I think the Stones are completely over-rated. In saying that, I do believe that people generally say they "LOVE THE BEATLEs, OMG I'M THEIR BIGGEST FAN" but have only heard the singles, and only own Sgt. Pepper, and, perhaps One, because it was fairly recent.

However, for those of us who aren't lazy, and actually seek out talented, thought out, cohesive, intelligent music, there are Beatles tracks that could surely slot into that category.

In my veritably great opinion, I would say that the Beatles have far to few songs compared to their large fanbase that fit into this category. I can only listen to While My Guitar Gently Weeps because it is a good song, other beatles songs are good but frankly I wouldn't want to waste my time with them when I could be listening to something better.

Hahaha, I remember once I was having a conversation with a kid whose favorite band was Led Zeppelin, he asked me what my favorite song was and I said, "The Rover", he was completely dumbfounded.

I would bring that up every so often to people to laugh about how ridiculous it was, but they percieved it as me being a music snob. I maintain that it isn't the case, I just find it humurous that someone who hasn't listened to a band in 4 years still knows more about them then some classic rock bore that's never even heard one of Zeppelin's better songs.

These are the people polluting the music world with their ignorant, tasteless opinions.

Agreed, completely.

I was reading on a previous thread, something about how the song "Hurt" really affected them. Something about how the fact it was written by Johnny Cash was what touched them the most.

This, made me laugh. I didn't even think you needed to be a music snob to know that he covered NIN. Seriously.

It's people like this that make me want to stop listening to music completely, because the lack of appreciation.

Reminds me of a conversation I had about a month ago. A guy was telling me Led Zep was his favourite and I asked him which albums he liked most. He said Mothership. Ten minuted later he told me that he didn't own a single "greatest hits" album, which means he thought Mothership was a studio album. And Led Zep was supposedly his favourite band.

I get this from Beatles fans too, they're enormously ignorant of their music even though they claim it's the best band ever.
