For me personally, I only started really appreciating subtler, quieter music when I aged past 30. Before then, I was way more dependent on novel sounds and immediate gratification. It has only been in recent years that I've started seeing how simple and boring music like Joan Baez, Carly Simon, fado, celtic, etc. is not boring if you show some patience and let the nuances of the songwriting get under your skin.

It would definitely be fallacious to assume that one will necessarily gravitate towards more and more complex/weird/novel/intense things the older one gets. I personally took three decades to learn that music isn't only about immediate energy, hooks and interesting, unique sounds. Put simply, of course.

I'm probably being captain obvious again. It's just that I can see how one would think that a music obsessive should develop a taste for more and more esoteric pleasures over the years, but it can go the opposite direction too.

Personally, I'm feeling less interested in experimental and abrasive music than I used to.

Young people generally are. Even those without ADHD.

A man who listens to the same music when he was 50 as he did when he was 20 spent 30 years listening to jazz.

Incorrect.

A man who does not listen to jazz at either 20 or 50 has wasted 50 years of his life.

MicShazam 10-17-2017 02:51 PM

Most of the jazz I've listened to felt like a waste of time allright.

Also incorrect.

I'm like literally right there on the 30 year mark with Cecil and Ornette. Free jazz has been the biggest constant in my listening habits. A solid appreciation for free jazz is a litmus test with me. If you get it I'll take your opinion into consideration about anything. If not, I discount opinions that are outside of their purview. Especially negative ones. Like with Bat, if he likes something I know right away it's very likely to be good. But if he doesn't like something I take it with a grain of salt. I don't care if everyone wants to call me a #FrownDickRider because this is the truth. There's a few cases where I'm not eye to eye on every single musician but I make sure I check out the stuff you rave on and almost always feel the same way.

Haters can hate y'all but Frown knows his stuff. Respect where it's due.
