Default Has anybody personally every written a song about the same thing?

I mean obviously it's done, but I was just interested to read users' variations on the same concept/topic for two songs and if there's a slightly different tone to it.

there is no such thing as an original topic so any topic you write about regardless of the perspective has already been done so in away every one already does what you are asking about

i may be wrong, but i believe he means writing two songs about one concept rather than gauging your original in comparison to another artists.

i think there's many original topical ideas, yet these can only be made tangible through the creation of art, so there would be a "different tone" to them. hell i can play the same song twice but its delivery will be affected due to my mood.

How specific are you talking?
Of course I've written songs about love.
I've written songs about the same person.
But how specific is the concept you're talking about.

Well I guess mean telling the same story/sentiments but in different words.. e.g. if you wrote 2 songs about the same situation where there's a person you like who doesn't know you exist .etc.

Certainly can be done. Don't know if you like the Libertines, but look at all their songs that were related to the failing relationtionship of Pete and Carl (lead singers).. "What Became of the Likely Lads" "You're My Waterloo" "Don't Look Back Into The Sun"... etc. Well supposedly, anyways. They're all slightly different, but more or less about the same topic... that can be expressed in many different ways. Some of the emotion seems sorrowful, while other resentful depending on the song.

Oh, should add in I have personally done it through prose about my ex. First song referred to more sad feeling, but topic remained 'we were on two different planets' type, the next was more resentful, I suppose. What I mean by that is I wrote about our different perspectives on 'love' and the relationship as a whole. I was nice for sexual favours, though I was in love, whereas my ex was a lover and would more or less only 'comply' with physical things. I was not romantic, whereas my ex only wanted romance... so the songs revolve around those opposite ends of the spectrum from different emotional perspectives.

I'm sure I have before.
Many people do, but not many things inspire me to write songs, so I stay on the same subject until I have a new one to write about, you know?

I love listening to one my favorite songs, then noticing the lyrics seem somehow too familiar, then I remember I kinda wrote something similar some years ago. It just makes me feel some kind of connection with the music I'm listening to, it's like I truly understand what the writer of the song was talking about.

That's funny, because I get the exact opposite feeling.
When lyrics are similar to mine, or the song sounds like something I wrote, I get annoyed.
I think it's because I play my songs to the point that I'm bored with them.

If it is something I wrote and never liked, I'd hate the song cause I'd feel they're mediocre to the point that I'm better than them.

But in what I was talking about, it's usually the idea, and not the sentence ... they usually say it in a better way in the song
