If someone wants others to recommend Soul or Funk music to them, this is the place to ask.

Ah! thanks.

Violent & Funky 04-30-2010 05:36 PM

I'm into a lot of bass-heavy rock music like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone, 311, etc. What kind of similar funk groups might I like?

I would consider the Chili Peppers funk. Thats why Dave whatshisname from Janes Addiction didn't work out. JD are rock. Not jacking your post, just sayin

MAStudent 05-03-2010 01:29 AM

Can anyone recommend any 3 person/instrument funk bands?

Eugene 05-11-2010 05:27 AM

Demon Fuzz

Little known Brit soul/funk/prog/afro-rock outfit only made the one LP, but what an LP (AFREAKA)....What do you think?

NSW 05-20-2010 05:09 PM

Can anyone recommend some newer soul bands/artists that have a rich, heavy horn section playing with them?

ikvat 06-06-2010 03:24 PM

BEN L'ONCLE SOUL is a young french (no, this is not an hallucination) soul singer.
Oncle Ben on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
He recently signed with Motown France.

I like the funk groove. We play funk now, but we have 5 people. It just gets kind of clunky getting 5 people to do one thing. We do ok at it, but I would like to, i.e. all go in one car to a show. Agree on less well paid but close to the heart shows more easily, etc.

I am looking at starting a 3 piece with bass/drums/sax. The sax is the lead singer also. Just think it might be too thin. Guitar seems most versatile for a lead/rhythm instrument. Just trying to formulate ideas.

Yeah, we have drums/guitar/bass/sax/vox, like I was saying in the other thread. For this band would like keys and trumpet also. Sounds great, but just for practice/booking/ mutual train of thought I am considering down sizing. 3 people just seems so manageable.

I like the Isleys.

Yah, I booked us around here for 3 years until I had the bass player do it. I don't have time or want to listen to his nagging. Now he realizes what I was doing, and that he sucks at it. Oh well, have fun. I still get to play gigs.

We make $300-$700 for most shows.

Any reunion, private party, wedding starts at $800. Usually $1,000 for a wedding.

What I'm saying is I would like to play a local radio station fund raiser for my friend that works there for free every once in a while, but some people are all about the money. We play 2-4 shows a month at $3-700. Not like 1-we'll ever get rich at this 2-throwing in that type of show will hurt us.

I don't want to worry about $ when my good friend has a birthday, I want us to be able to just play him or her.

Good point about the bass and drums. It was a challenge for me to "unbusy" my style when I started playing with people, so the dynamics could be heard better. In a three piece I might be able to be more Mitch Mitchell about it.

I used to like to do a lot of fills, etc. Now I think thats boring if it doesn't lead somewhere.

Enjoying this echange. Seemed like no one was uncool enough to talk for a while. This is why I joined, to get ideas and feedback. I know my opnion well. I like to hear other people's opnions

Yeah I know brother, if you can get 3 or $400 a night it saying something, whats ironic is the same amount applied back in the 80s in night clubs, average pay that is.
And thats great your doing the fundraiser for your friend, its all part of a cover bands job, which by the way you have all of my respect because I know what a hard job it is to stay tight as a band, etc.
Whats some of your favorite songs playing drums? Hendrix's drummer Mitch Mitchell is cool, what are some of your other favorite style of drummers?

My favorite drummer is Carter Beauford.

My favorite songs to play are We Want the Funk- P Funk, Hard To Handle- Ottis Redding, Treat me Right- Grace Potter, Lets Straighten it Out- Etta James, Tell me Something Good- Chalka Kahn, Dancing Nancies- Dave Mathews Band, and Cold Sweat- James Brown.

George Michael is the polar opposite of soul.

I'm assuming by the name "Violent & Funky" that you are already familiar with Infectious Grooves. If not, check them out. Incubus' first album, "Fungus Amongus," is a great piece of funk metal. Other bands you might like are Primus (try the albums "Frizzle Fry" and "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" for a funky 3-member outfit), Firehose (also 3 members), Rage Against the Machine, I Mother Earth and Praxis (featuring Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Buckethead and Brain). I would wait until you dive into Praxis, though. It's some of the strangest music I've ever heard.

Kinda Blue 09-19-2010 10:23 AM

This is not a reply to any request, just a general recommendation.

Jarle Bernhoft. A great Norwegian soul/funk artist, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with a characteristic voice. He has released one studio album and a double live album as a solo artist. You'll have a hard time finding his albums if you're outside of Norway, but check out his solo album on Spotify. It's actually called Ceramik City Chronicles, but unfortunately mistagged as Ceramic City Chronicles on Spotify.

He's supposedly a great live artist, too, though I can't say that as I haven't seen him. ):

You should try quoting next time. This is difficult to find and I'm lucky to have found it. :)

I'm already a fan of Infectious Grooves, Primus, and Rage. I've heard of Firehose and Praxis, but not I Mother Earth. I'll have to check those bands out...

hey I'm looking for funk recommendations, specifically guitar driven funk. Im a pretty big chili peppers fan, and I'm looking for other funk(y) bands where the guitar plays a major role, as opposed to having a big horn section

There's some newer soul/funk out there with really solid horn sections. These are more funky than anything, but I'd recommend Lettuce, Amnesty, Soulive, Addison Groove Project, The Brecker Brothers, The Daktaris, Dumpstaphunk, Galactic, Jive, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Ulu, Anything with Maceo Parker.

Check out the song Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. You have to skip ahead a minute or two, but it's essentially a ten minute funk/soul guitar solo by Eddie Hazel. Everything I learned about funk guitar started there. Actually, everything on the album Maggot Brain is a good place to start. Also, I'd check out Eric Krasno or Will Bernard.

MAStudent 11-04-2010 01:30 AM

I like # 4

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe

some great funk recommendations:
Manu Dibango - Africadelic
and anything from Funkadelic

I recommend everyone who has a Spotify user to listen to his latest album Solidarity Breaks.

soul

I'm fairly new to classic soul music and am looking to put a mix together
Of songs similar to At Last by Etta James. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Phantom Limb 04-07-2011 10:47 PM

Can anyone suggest some really funky stuff that is a little bit more undergound? Maybe with good breaks? Anything is appreciated.

Necromancer 07-01-2011 06:44 PM

One of my favorite single's from the 70s.

MAStudent 07-06-2011 02:23 PM

Just saw Maceo Parker a couple months ago. His band is ridiculous. They were so tight and profuse at the same time, I didn't even want to laugh or clap or whistle, or I might miss something, so I stood there in mid-laugh with my mouth open like and idiot.

Marcus Shadd was the drummer. Damn. Makes me want to quit. Maceo's true nepwhew.

I recommend this show to anyone, and I'm pretty sure they are in Italy or somewhere in Eureope right now.

MAStudent 07-06-2011 02:26 PM

I've seen P-Funk/ George Clinton twice. They become kind of fuzzy/ indistinct after a while, and repetitive. Maceo Parker's show remains clean, distinct, fresh, and classy- even on the same songs.

Stephen 09-05-2011 10:10 PM

I think my favourite Parliament would have to be Chocolate City.

Men on the chessboard are a new up and coming funk band that I think are heavily influenced by the chilli peppers.

I think i'd like to expand my musical interest into the world of soul/funk.
Any recommendations for funk beginner ears?
I want to get my groove on.

Euronomus 10-08-2011 06:51 AM

I just recently discovered Gil-Scott Heron after hearing about his passing in the news. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some other 70's soul/funk/jazz in a similar vein?
really what I'm looking for is something with the dark meaningful lyrics and musicianship in his earlier albums.

c42daves 12-19-2011 01:57 AM

Eddie Hazel

Looking for similar artists/guitarists to Eddie Hazel. I'm new to his music, so if anyone could recommend some albums, I would appreciate it ! Love that type of guitar work.

Your post is a couple of months old, but just in case your still around the boards. If you want pacifically good funk, I would suggest the 70s.

Earth, Wind, & Fire
Commodores
Ohio Players
Average White Band (AWB)
Sly & The Family Stone
The Isley Brothers
The Brothers Johnson
Rick James
James Brown
Parliament/Funkadelic

Edgar Winter's record Recycled is a great mix of soul, funk and blues. Check out the songs Competition and Parallel Love. Nice choppy guitar in this stuff. Stevie Wonder's "Fufilling First Finale" is a great record with a great track "Bird of Beauty. A little more out there stuff in the jazz funk vein is by John Scofield entitled "A Go Go". If you are a musical adventurer I highly recommend this release. I am currently in a R&B/soul original band called Escape Fantasy. You can check our debut CD at CDbaby.com. So much music so little time. Take Care.
