if you like james brown and the meters then check out these guys
http://www.cosmicsweatsociety.com
when in New Orleans Jeff Watkins from James Brown's band sits in on alto sax, along with Willie Green whom is currently touring with the Neville Brothers...the 4 piece is smokin, it's got the old school funk sound mix todays jam theories..
and oh my, how can a thread like this exsist without someone mentioning the Dirty Dozen Brass Band somewhere, they've been around for a long time in NOLA...
for more recent new orleans style funky stuff check out galactic, big sam's funky nation, papa grows funk, and P.B.S(porter, baptiste, and stoltz)
and for bass lines, VICTOR WOOTEN...funkiest man alive on the bass today

i love Sly and the Family Stone and the Miles Davis fusion stuff. Zappa did some great fusion on the Waka/Jawaka Grand Wazoo albums too.

also, an organist called Larry Young did some great funk/fusion

my favourite fusion/funk unit though, is a local (Australia) band called "Goose" there albums might be hard to get elsewhere but they are seriously high powered funk

I'm ahuge fan of Funkadelic and Jaco Pastoris, not to mention Parlaiment, The Meters, James Brown, Sam and Dave, too much Disco, and just a lover of funk. Bass player myself. Funk's just where it's at.

Anyone heard O.V. Wright before? His song "You're Gonna Make Me Cry" is one of the greatest soul songs you will ever hear. period.
