I enjoy a lot of what people have posted, so there's no need to rewrite it.

One person asked where to start with Tower of Power. Get hold of 'What is Hip', and you've got ToP in a nutshell.

One I haven't seen mentioned are the OJays. For the Love of Money is one of the absolutely most bad a## basslines you're ever going to hear.

Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Rose Royce, Billy Preston, Edwin Starr, all have the funk.

If you love soul...you'll love this gem. (Turn Up Volume)

The Carstairs also did a superb, pounding version of Edwin Starr's - He Who Picks A Rose.

Jr... much prefer the soul of Edwin Starr over his funk work.
Tracks like '25 miles'.

Big fan of Mayfield too.

jimi hendrix was in parliament for a while before he left cos he didnt like the uniforms

Where'd you hear that? I don't claim to be an expert on Hendrix or any of Clinton's projects, so I can't say for certain it isn't true, but I've read a good deal about all of them and have never heard such. If he ever worked with Clinton, it was before Parliament or Funkadelic were officially formed. Clinton had been in the music since around 1955, though, so it's certainly possible, he had a group called the Parliaments before Funkadelic was formed in '68, which may be what Hendrix was in. Still, I've heard about Hendrix touring with the Isleys and Little Richard, but never Parliament.

i read it in an Uncut special magazine of the great guitarists where there was a small "did you know" box which said that he played in an early line-up of parliament

^True...before he launched his own career he also played with Sam Cooke, the Isley Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner and (I think)... Little Richard.

He definitely played with Little Richard and the Isley Brothers, I've read that multiple times.
