A compilation is a little more personal and shows a little more dedication and effort. |
And we already have threads for lists of songs.
This thread is specifically for mixtapes. |
Someone give me a theme to base my next compilation off of. Like, letters, keywords, a genre, or some sort of idea. My last one was kind of random.
First reply wins. |
Not punk pop
|
Everything I like that is not pop punk*?
All right, but I'm not going to do much "regular" punk either. *pop punk, not punk pop :nono: |

New mix, lacking pop punk.
Note that a lot of stuff was considered, but since it's pretty popular stuff that I figure most of you own anyways (Mars Volta, Pink Floyd), I didn't put it on here. 1. At The Drive-In "Give It A Name" Well, At The Drive-In would have to be my favorite non pop punk band. This song is off of their 1997 El Gran Orgo EP. It's one of my favorite ATDI songs, and therefore it lands on this compilation. 2. The Northern Pikes "Dream Away" They're some Canadian rock band, and I have a used copy of one of their CDs. I like quite a few songs on the CD, and this would probably be my favorite. I really like the vocals in this song, as well as the lyrics. I don't listen to much of this band anymore, but once in a while I'll put this song on, or stick that CD in and listen to my favorite songs. 3. Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster "Tough As John Jacobs" I don't know where to begin. This song is everything I love about Maylene. Sweet riffs, a catchy chorus, and Dallas Taylor's gruff vocals. This is a rockin' tune. :afro: 4. The Wallflowers "Sleepwalker" This is the first time a Wallflowers song will appear on this compilation. This time, a more upbeat song. I think the this song represents the poppier music of The Wallflowers. It's catchy pop-rock with some nice riffs. 5. Sunny Day Real Estate - Theo B I really need to listen to more SDRE. This is a good song of theirs, a more indie-rock song. I wasn't going to include Seven or In Circles because everyone knows those. What can be said? It's a good song. 6. Texas Is The Reason "Johnny On The Spot" Okay, this is the only song that I REALLY like by Texas Is The Reason. Their other stuff is pretty good, but this just blows all that stuff out of the water. 7. My Favorite Band "Racer Why" Yes, that's what the band is called. I was on iLike on Facebook one time and saw that this was a free MP3 and had jsut been uploaded. I downloaded it and loved it. It's funky, rockin', and just a great instrumental track. I thought I should download some of their other stuff today, but it's just random pop punk stuff. This is what they should be making more of. 8. Alexisonfire "Rough Hands" This was a pretty popular song off of their latest album. It's a slow song. It starts off with Dallas' pretty singing, and then the screaming cuts in. It's got some great lines in it and I hate describing these songs. 9. Billy Talent "This Is How It Goes" You probably know them for that Fallen Leaves song with the weird music video. This song is off of their first album and is one of their more aggressive songs. It features some pretty tight instrumental sections, and one of my favorite Billy Talent rhythms. I particularly love Ben's screaming during the chorus. 10. The Wallflowers "God Says Nothing Back" Well, I can see why The Wallflowers were proud of this track. It's a slow, dark, folky song. Jakob Dylan's voice suits the song very well. There's a lot of great little hooks in this song. It's only number 6 on "Rebel, Sweetheart" but it's a great way to end this compilation. Link Tell me what you think. |
1.The Melvins - The Talking Horse
This song is my favourate of the Melvins, and indeed my favourate of all time! It's mixture of riffs and Dale's amazing drumming make it a great track. The music video is great, too. 2.The Pixies - Where Is My Mind? This song is probably the band's anthem. The band who created 'loud, quiet, loud' and have influenced so many important bands, this song just makes me happy and I love it so much my band are recording it on the 12th of September. 3.Nirvana - Love Buzz This song got me into alternative music, which is now the biggest thing in my life musically. Krist's bassline and Kurt's playing with Chad's drumming make this cover one hell of a song! 4.Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over the Rainbow/ Wonderful World A song that everyone knows, but not the artist, who is a legend. This song cheers me up and drove me to learn to play Ukulele. 5.Creed - My Sacrifice The band's anthemic song always brings a tear to my eye... this will be played at my funeral. This song epitomises emotion. 6.Screaming Trees - Butterfly I can't put my finger on what makes this song appeal to me... it has inspired my lyric work and guitar work... this band, this song... amazing. 7.Dirty Bob - Point of No Return They're a local band I went to see, bought their album. They've got so much talent. After seeing the guitarist work with so many effects pedals and make beautiful and catchy and hard rocking riffs, it inspired me to write the only solo with a wah pedal I've written and liked. 8.Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole When I heard this song, I fell in love with the band and it has been a staple on my ipod ever since. Their music seems to fit every mood I'm ever in. All of their songs are amazing such as 'Here Come's The Rooster' and 'Them Bones' 9.Army of Freshmen - Juliet This may seem out of place on this list, but I am a huge fan and friend of them, I even have a signed guitar from them! This song fits me so well. It's basically about a nerd fancying a girl who don't know about him. It's one of their anthemic songs. I love it. I also learned a lot about how to put on a show from their gigs. 10.Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears The first song I ever saw on kerrang! when I was about 7. Eleven years later, I've seen Zakk Wylde and Ozzy live and Ozzy still remains a huge influence of mine with all of his music from his Sabbath days through to his days now with Zakk Wylde, one of my favourate guitarists of all time. I've learned so much from them. It was incredibly hard to write this list. I hope nobody disrespects me for it. Since it reflects my alternative background and is just a compilation of what I love. WASPSTAR YOU ARE BRILLIANT.
Look's very interesting, i'll be downloading. |
i'll have that thankyou waspstar.. yoink!
|
thanks very much waspstar nice playlist
|
OK I have had given Waspstars comp a run through. Initial thoughts:
Razor Dance- Richard Thompson. Vocals reminded me of David Byrne a little which is no bad thing. However it did'nt blow me away. 'twas Okay. Tell Me, Momma- Bob Dylan. Never heard this before. Very good tune. Enjoyed it a lot. Mad, Mady Judy- Buzzcocks. I still need to get the first three albums as I only have their singles album. Great track. Straight Jacket- The Attractions. Very indicative of it's time. Nothing to blow me away. Hold On- Steve Jones. I remember when this album came out and hating everything about it. My opinion still has'nt changed :) Swargmitha- The Aidenn Trilogy. Whilst sounding a little like The Cure and being fairly unoriginal, I like this big time. I will have to find some more by them. Penna State Line- Pupa's Window.Unsure about this one. It teeters perilously close to the sort of banal mid tempo acoustic number that I don't like. Reno, Nevada- Richard & Mimi Farina. The backing vocals eventually killed my liking this track. The Wheel & The Maypole- XTC. One of the best U.K bands, criminally overlooked by the general public. Top band. The Train From Kansas City- The Shangri-Las; Amazing piano riff, a perfect vocal, and for a 60's pop song, the lyrics aren't all that bad. You said it as well as I could. |
Not done one of these in ages so I present....
Urbans Obscure(ish)Post Punk Bands Who Don't Really Get Much Attention On The Forum Compilation It's not all Joy Division , Gang Of Four and Public Image Ltd you know.... 01 - Inner City Unit - Watching The Grass Grow This seems as good a place as any to start. This band who i've talked about a lot in the past were fronted by ex Hawkwind man Nick Turner. This song was the first ever No 1 song in the first ever week of the Indie charts. Taken from the album Pass Out (1980) 02 - Liquid Liquid - Cavern Ever wondered where Grandmaster Flash got THAT bassline from? Well now you know Taken from the E.P. Optimo (1983) 03 - The Teardrop Explodes - Reward Years before he was writing fantastic books about Krautrock Julian Cope wrote possibly the best post punk single ever. (If you forget Love Will Tear Us Apart ever existed) Taken from the album Kilimanjaro (1980) 04 - Section 25 - Dirty Disco It wouldn't be a proper post punk compilation without a band off Factory Records. Think Gang Of Four with a phat bassline , less sixth form politics and a lot more balls. Taken from the album Always Now (1981) 05 - Blurt - Alouette Spazzy jazz Taken from the album Pagan Strings (1992) 06 - Sad Lovers And Giants - Things We Never Did Echo & The Bunnymen with horns Taken from the album Epic Garden Music (1982) 07 - MX-80 Sound - Tidal Wave More spazzy jazz but with a much more obvious punk influence Taken from the album Hard Attack (1977) 08 - Fad Gadget - Ideal World Fad Gadget are usually known as a fine synthpop band . However this first track off their fourth album showed that they also liked to rock out a bit too. Taken from the album Gag (1984) 09 - Savage Republic - Next To Nothing Savage Republic are an interesting one. They were hugely influenced by African music and Africa was a re-occurring topic in their lyrics. Yet they played with the same type of intensity & chaos as The Birthday Party. Taken from the album Tragic Figures (1982) 10 - Blue Orchids - The Flood The Blue Orchid were formed in 1979 by Martin Bramah & Una Baines from the original line up of The Fall. A bit more melodic than The Fall but not a million miles away. Taken from the album The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) (1982) ***Obligatory Song By The Fall*** 11 - The Fall - Leave The Capitol Well you didn't think they wouldn't be here. I decided to go with this forgotten little gem off their Slates E.P. The lyrics are about vampires but it's just a thinly veiled attack by MES on London. Taken from the E.P. Slates (1981) LINK |
Yoink!
I forgot to say that Waspstar's was good, some good tracks i didn't have by Dylan and the Buzz****s, though that Steve Jones song made me squirm a bit. |
Quote:
I think I'm about the only person in the world who genuinely likes the Steve Jones album. It's so awful and cheesy and cliched that it's good in a weird way. The same thing goes for the Attractions album (Mad About The Wrong Boy). Downloading Urban's comp now! |
Last two lists deleted-no linkage. Read the title thread, first page anything. Just friggin' read.
|
Always good to hear The Teardrop Explodes - Reward and there's a few on there I've not heard before...cheers.
|
wow mad list urban!
i forgot to add liquid liquid is bad ass |
re Waspstar's compilation: some pleasant music I'd likely never have heard otherwise and some songs from old faves I was not aware of. Richard Thompson ftw. This is what the 10-track thread is all about! next up: post-punk
|
Molecules you missed one of mine:
http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...eleted-34.html Minstrel-I forgot about yours fella. Apologies. Listening now. |

Urban first of all I forgot how much 'Leave The Capitol' genuinely arouses me, so thanks for that, absolutely prime Fall. Only other familiar bands are Teardrops (where is the love for the Great Druid on MB?!), Orchids (have only heard 'Work') and Section 25 (the guys in khaki shorts in '24 Hour Party People' if I'm not mistaken). NOT Liquid Liquid who I confused with identical-sounding funky-ass group Medium Medium. Some great tracks here, if you have more post-punk obscurities knocking about I insist you consider a Post-Punk part 2. |
I won't like jackhammer, HATED 'the New Danger' album (guitars have no place in hip-hop), but I only knew two other artists in your mix: Meat Puppets (fine choice) and Melt Banana (self-explanatory).
As for the rest... you have to appreciate a good alphabetized compilation, and their was the broad range of styles I'd expect from a Jackhammer special. I am particularly stuck on Melody Gardot (like a less ostentatious and annoying Winehouse) and Maudlin of the Well track (prog metal?). For some reason the 'Kill the King' causes disturbing mind-pictures of an Editors/Thin Lizzy hybrid. Fortunately the tune is a belter. Top drawer (bar that track) ;) |
I thought I would finally have a go at one of these so here we go :
Send big files the easy way. Files too large for email attachments? No problem! Cavalleria Rusticana: Intermezzo : Orchestra of Bologna Municop Thetra The opening music to the Scorcese classic Raging Bull. If I had this playing in my head 24/7, I still dont thin I would get sick of it. Fifty Five Falls : Marissa Nadler Too much emphasis was put on the word 'haunting' in reviews I read for this for me to really judge it fairly. But after hearing it for myself, I can see why it is referred to as so. Marcus Garvey : Burning Spear A fine start to the finest reggae album ever. The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore : The Walker Brothers Spector style production, baritone vocals and an almost ironic major key. Fastlove : George Michael Yes that's right. Possibly the finest pop song of the last 20 years. Beautiful production, around 5 different memorable hooks. If you're dubious about George, begin here. Lazy : X-Press 2 'A moment' as it is described at the end of the song. David Byrne <3, rly. St. Elmo's Fire : Brian Eno My opening into the world of Eno, I hope it will act as someone elses. Death (Crystal Castles Remix) : White Lies I have no real love for either of these acts, yet this song seems to really in it's grip. Untrue : Burial Slowing down the set with some groggy, gritty dubstep is always a good move. Tuj la Kompanar' (Les Copains d'Abord) : Georges Brassens Never heard Chanson? it's about time you did. |
Sunshine : Atmosphere
It's a feel good song. I've always loved it. Slug comes through with great lyrics, Ant comes through with great production Anxiety : Big Krizz Kaliko Amazing song. Krizz has so much versatility with his voice. Its absolutely amazing that he can do so much. Trying To Find A Balance: Atmosphere Another great, more aggressive song by Atmosphere, not any less amazing. Call U Later : Look Daggers Group consisting of 2Mex and Ikey Owens [of Mars Volta]. I'm digging everything I've heard from them so far. This whole album is pretty solid. Artsy : The Grouch You Ain't Artsier Than Me! Basically an anthem, saying that, just because you're a certain way, doesn't make you more creative than someone else. There's someone else in the world that does SOMETHING exactly the same way you do. Guarantees : Atmosphere I Promise. Last one. This is probably one of their best tracks yet. Amazing production on this song, really comes through. Laid back/serious tone. Little Pills : Kabosh [Tech N9ne + Big Krizz Kaliko] I'm really looking forward to this project. Two Rappers coming together to form a band. Of course, this is just a beat someone produced, but they're in the process of finding band members. One Good Time : Tech N9ne Amazingly personal track. Tech wishing he could cry, once. Why You Ain't Call Me? : Tech N9ne Tech N9ne waking up the industry. Saying he's one of the best. So why doesn't the Jay-Z's and Ludacris's call him for collabs and such? Ashes To Ashley : Sadistik [ft. Mac Lethal] Probably one of my favorite newer artists. Sadistik is the ****, as is Mac Lethal. They've came together to make an amazing track, on Sadistik's "The Balancing Act" Download |
Going to get on both of these, cheers!

Regarding waspstar's compilation-
Some really good tracks there :hphones: I disliked a few as well. Standouts were Razor Dance, Tell Me Momma and The Wheel and the Maypole. Reno Nevada - I really wanna like this, but the backing vocals were annoying. Penna State Line - There's just something about this that makes me dislike it. Hold On - I'm not goona call it horrible, but god damn boring and cliched. The rest were definitely enjoyable. |
Urbans: Post Punk is a difficult thing for me, for what i've heard that i've liked there's an equal amount that i can't stand as well. Naturally there was some cool stuff (first track was awesome, the Fall always good) but some stuff that didn't work for me at all. Lots of lovely bass-lines though.
Fridays: I was always going to have respect for this because it was just so ecclectic, it takes balls to put some of those tracks there so kudos. It ranged from gorgeous (Raging Bull soundtrack, Burning Spear, Burial) confusing that i liked it (CC remix, i HATE them normally) and ugly (X Press 2, that last track). There was a surprising amount of flow to it! Kirbys: My favourite of the bunch because i enjoyed every track, i should really pay more attention to underground hip-hop. I have Tech N9ne on my list to get especially, really good stuff. |

He has personal songs. [One Good Time, P.A.S.E.O., Message To The Black Man, I Love You But **** You, etc.] Club Songs. [Bout Ta Bubble, Let's Go, etc] Songs that are kinda about religion. [Hope For A Higher Power, Devil Boy, etc.] Sexual Songs. [Drill Team, That Box, Sex Out South] Fun Songs. [Slacker, Worst Enemy, Psycho Bitch/Psycho Bitch II, The Beast, etc] Whatever. Haha. Also. I'm interested in hearing what you thought about the Kabosh track, Little Pills. It's the only song they have out so far, but I'm hoping they continue working on that project. |
Quote:
I LOVED the The Grouch track though, some great lyrics and a nice subtle sample, really good stuff. |
Yeah, the thing about Kabosh is that they're looking for a live band. It's taking so long, because they want it to be perfect. So when it DOES happen, no samples. :)
The Grouch is REALLY great. Solo, and with the group he's in [Living Legends] Living Legends is The Grouch, Murs, Eligh, Bicasso, Aesop, Sunspot Jonz, Scarub, Luckyiam.PSC |
Quote:
|
No, haha. I wish it was Aesop Rock.
It's another dude named Aesop. The group would be worth it for Murs, though. |

May as well try making one of these things, test the waters :p:
This list doesn't really have a direction perse, just a whole bunch of random stuff, though it does seem a bit focused on Electronic/hip hop stuff. Anway... 1. In The Kingdom Of The Blind The One-Eyed Are Kings - Dead Can Dance A personal favourite of the Australian darkwave/gothic/ambient/world band. Simple song sung by Brendan Perry, and I still love it. Haunting. 2. Les Bras De Mer - Yann Tiersen From the album 'Le Phare' the song was written by and vocals performed by French songwriter Dominique A. Another fairly simple song, but quickly becoming a favourite, as I just recently got into Tiersen's work. A reference to his work overall is here, my first post of the thread. I particularly love the vocal work. 3. Mystery God - Fat Jon The Ample Soul Physician Cincinnati Hip-Hop artist and producer, formerly of Five Deez, Fat Jon keeps a simple, solid beat throughout with overlays of various woodwind and brass instruments. 4. Reascension - DJ Frane Interesting trip-hop sort of stuff with some nice sampling. Different to the rest of the album (Journey to the Planet of Birds) as it doesn't focus on sampling birds and nature sounds. Haven't fully made up my mind on it yet, but interesting none-the-less. 5. Son Of Mr Green Gene - Frank Zappa Had to include one of my favourite jazz fusion artists :p: From his best album, Hot Rats, a great piece. 6. Stella - Kashiwa Daisuke Talked enough about it here :p: 7. Stoney Street - Amon Tobin My favourite electronic sampler out there. Quality stuff, with a jazzy back beat. Also some solid Drum'n'Bass Jungle beats throughout the album (Bricolage) 8. The Dawn (feat. Shawn J. Period) – DJ Krush From his much acclaimed album, Kakusei, a nice mix with orchestral base. 9. Vargtimme - Helios Softer ambient electronic, nice to chill out to. 10. Ysabel’s Table Dance - Charles Mingus Had to also chuck in stuff from my favourite composer :p: From Tijuana Moods, YTD and Tijuana Moods is a little further removed from his more avant-garde big band stuff, but the use of different cultural sounds more than makes up for it. NOTE – Apologies if the list isn’t in order… Don’t know if it compressed in the same way as I ordered… MB list.rar |
That looks like an interesting mix, i'll give it a listen!
